AZ bonus points

I'm sure there is but it wouldn't matter a whole lot. A non res could draw a tag with 1 bonus point in the 10% rule. AZ bonus points basically just give you more chances to draw. Az draw is more like a raffle than a draw. If you have 10 bonus points that will basically be 10 raffle tickets in a raffle.

If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?

Jay, the number of points requred to be in the pass round, which is 20% of the tags, not 10%; varies by hunt number. So, the number of points required is different for every single unit, by weapon type.

I've got 11 elk points going into next year's draw, and while that is enough to be in the top group for some hunts, it definitely isn't enough for some others.

You can call the game & fish and request the info from last years for specific units. Doesn't mean it will play out the same this year but will give you an idea. If you ask the question in the Az section, someone may have bought the book and can look it up. They may have it on the website for free now, just not sure.

I actually like what I see. The only top pool so heavily weighted with nonresidents (72% and getting higher each year) that the 10% nonresident cap is virtually assured to fill in the 20% top points round for tougher draws is deer! All the other species are heavily weighted towards residents, meaning most of the tags go in the second nound 80% bonus points draw. There is hope for everything else, and I have 12 deer points! It will be a long wait for a strip/late Kaibab tag for nonresidents not in the top pool. Figure maybe 40-50 tags a year, 161 nonresidents in the top pool, and 400-500 nonresidents missing just the hunter ed point. I think more nonresidents move up into the top pool each year from the hunter ed class than draw tags....So being one point off means at least a 10 year wait until you have a chance as a nonresident.

You are correct and explains why our NR Hunter Ed class in Kingman, AZ this January is dang near mandatory if you hope to draw one of the better north of the Colorado River deer tags!

I have looked at the odds and I am having a hard time understanding. I now have 11 nonresident elk points and I am wondering how long till I am in good shape (max point pool) for archery elk hunt. I am looking at 9, 10, 3A-3C, and possible 23 North or South

LAST EDITED ON Nov-21-08 AT 08:40PM (MST)[p]Utah400 I am no expert but it looks like you have a shot in the max point pool this coming year (2009) it is not a guarantee by any means but unit 10 and 3A/C will be your best bet. With lower tag numbers in the 23's and 9 and the popularity of 9 they will be a harder draw for a nonresident.

After further review I am not sure if you have a chance or not there are 848 total hunters with 11 bonus points.

Last year 15, 11 pointers drew 3a/c and 13 in 10

EF I agree, I really thought most elk tags, and nearly all good elk tags would be only drawn by NR with max pnts for that hunt. Good news, I have 7 points now and next few years are full with good tags I will draw and AK so I am in good shape for an AZ elk tag in 5 years. Bow.
