Lookin for general advice on a Wyoming elk unit. Dad's gonna be 74 and has never connected on a bull with his bow. We both have Max PPs. I'm lookin for a unit where we can archery hunt and come back later for the rifle opener if necessary. I can only get him about a mile from the rig or horse which is why I'd like to find a unit where the horses will allow us access away from others.

Right now I'm looking at 7, 61, 62, 63-64, 36, 37, 38, or 39. Any info would be appreciated.

unit 7 would be the best choice especially if you can pay a trespass fee, which would then make it a lot easier on the both of you due to limited access.

Area 7 would be alright. You might also look at 35. If you're looking to hunt archery and rifle, 38 and 39 are out of the question. 36 and 37 would be decent as well. 36 better than 37. 37 elk all go to private fairly early. Good luck.

I hunted deer in and around units 61, 62, 63-64 this year. There are elk in those units for sure, but be aware that there are also lots of grizzlies and that you will have to deal with that hassle.

I would only look at area 7 if you can pay a trespass fee... The limited public land in that area has become over run with hunters, archery and rifle, in the last couple years. I've had a lot of success in Area 7 but trying to get away from other hunters has become a near impossible challenge... I'm looking at 19 and 38 this year....
