So I took my 15 year old nephew out on his cow hunt this morning. We woke up at 3 am and took off. He had the Diamond Mountain South Slope cow tag. Ty and his dad went up Saturday on the opener and got stuck in the snow most of the day.
Lot's of fog in the basin so we were a little late getting there. We were probably 20 min from where I wanted to be when I saw 3 cows standing on the side of the road. I yelled for him to jump out and get his gun. By the time he was loaded obviously the elk had ran off. We went down to a knob overlooking where they had run. Ty saw a cow making her way up through the junipers about 300 yards. She stopped and Ty got a good rest. Well he couldn't find her in the scope. He was freaking out saying his scope was fogged, so I looked through it and it wasn't. Well the cow started walking through the trees. I told him to watch for her and I would check out the other side of the knob. There was a cow on the opposite side hill about 200 yards so I got Ty over there. He got a good rest and fired. She just ran off, I told him that I thought he missed. I told him to walk over there and I would guide him to where she was standing and then to follow her tracks to see if there was a hit.
I had my little girl in the truck and headed back to it and told him to meet up there. Well it wasn't 5 min and he was back with a big grin. She had only gone 80 yards.

We had planned on a big spot and stalk and big pack out. Which is usual for this place, but I guess we got lucky today.

He was pumped. This makes his 2nd big game animal. Got the mighty 2-point buck in Oct. He is all about archery, but has found it is quite difficult.

My little girl wanted to go so badly, and she was a trooper

Charli and I with Ty's elk. She even helped drag her down off the mountain to the truck. Though she was really sure she didn't want to touch the "guts".
I feel pretty cool having a daughter that wants to go with dad out hunting.

Pretty cool. Two youngsters experiencing a first in hunting. Doesn't get much better than that.

Sorry, I like to tell the story.

Look at my baby girl! I just love that she likes to go with you. I am so glad the hunt went so well and it wasn't too much for her. I was a little worried. Doesn't Ty look proud. I'm sure he was "stoked".
