Was wondering what size of Elk does this unit produce? I'm mainly looking for information on the Muzzle Loader season. Does anyone out there have any insight on this unit?

There are no frills here. If you want a 400" bull you're in the wrong unit. Even if you want a 350+ bull you are going to have to spend a considerable amount of time on this unit. It's small and steep. After that big fire on the South end I think a lot of the elk down there jumped ship. I usually see 10-15 bulls all winter long down on the Payson golf course and I have not seen 1 bull this year. There are a few hitting the hay stacks over by Tower mountain but nothing huge. There have not even been the elk on Loafer Mountain this year that there are normally. So....now that I've brought you the reality of the Nebo unit, as long as you have realistic expectations you should do fine and have a good time. I would recommend you not pass on a 320 class animal unless you are prepared to eat tag soup. That being said there are still some good bulls on the unit. I would dare say there is NOT a 400" bull on this unit and if there is, he's alone in that class.

It's always an adventure!!!

By the way, I heard rumor of a 400" bull in the BYU dairy farm. NOT only was it not 400"...it wasn't even 350". I'm not trying to be negative. Just realistic. Be very careful of the statement, "I know where there is a 400" bull".

+1 to what Jim said.

Not to say this unit does not have what it takes to produce a large bull. But it has been quite a few years since I saw a jaw droper on it. Just have a good time.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-14-09 AT 03:30PM (MST)[p]Thanks for your information and insight. I got lucky and drew the Expo Muzzle Loader tag fot this unit and am just trying to get a feel for what it has to offer. I guess scouting and luck will play a huge roll. One thing I know for sure I will have a GREAT time. Thanks again.

Antlerless hunting and high (146 in 08) LE tag numbers have put this unit in the ditch. Its a sad but true situation on this unit. I have been told that there is a for real 390 bull on Maple Mt. though.
