Long time visitor, first time poster...

Can someone shed some light on an extremely weird buck on another site? I know we can't post links, so I'll just say to go check out the pics on muleymadness.com in their forum. What is that black growth?? Anyone seen this sort of thing before?

Great first post!

If that's all velvet, then talk about shrinkage after the drying period! What a freak!
Welcome to the site BTW!

Michael~All Gods creatures welcome... right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy.

Although the frame is fairly typical, I would say it is some type of cactus buck. Or it has some type of genetic defect that has allowed it to grow that way.

ya i have seen a very similiar buck that was shot by an old timer round 2001. It appeared in trophy hunter magazine. The deformation was caused either by trauma to antlers while growing or a freak genetic mutation.

It's a cactus buck. Those antlers have dozens of small points and bumps growing all around them from top to bottom. We killed a buck that looked like that a few years ago. He had nuts the size of raisins. He scored 321 SCI, and his antlers look similar to this one's. A cactus buck's face has a distinct look to it as well. They lack the dark markings of a normal mule deer buck on their forehead, and the moustache and chin marks.

yep its a cactus buck. My buddys sister shot a buck with antlers that looked like that. the velvet was dark almost black with tons of little bumps all over. It was a spike with a 25 inch spread with lots of little points at the bottom. the buck had no testicals. I wish I had a picture of that deer it was wild looking.

yup, cactus buck. look between his hind legs. no bag. a buck that big would have a big one.

Stag buck, I have this one running around my land for the last 4 years, he stays in velvet all year, never drops his horns and they just keep growing (not very fast) but they keep getting bigger. Note the huge drop tine on his right side, it actually looks like a shoe horn, we have nicknamed him 'Club'.
