Archery Muley Success (photos)

I was able to tag out on my mule deer buck tonight. I ended up shooting the heavy buck that was with the big buck with double kickers that I photographed last week. On Thursday I had the big buck I photographed at 88 yards but a couple of does busted me and spooked him. I was out again today and was glassing this evening and hadn't seen to much. This heavy guy came over a hill and was heading in my general direction. I wanted to make sure which route he was going to take before I tried to intercept him. All of a sudden he just stopped. He was not alarmed and had no idea that I was around but he did not move a muscle for twenty minutes. It was like he realized he wasa little early in going to feed so he thought he had better just wait a minute or two. He finally started browseing again and I headed to cut him off. He dropped into a hollow filled with brush and I removed my boots and quietly moved towards where I thought he would come out. I set up beside a chokecherry bush and then ranged the edge of the bushes where I thought he would reappear at 33 yards. He came out perfectly and turned broadside. I was already at full draw when he turned broadside. I put my 30 yard pin a little high and released. The arrow hit a little farther back than where I wanted it to but completely passed through. He too off and I headed for a rise to see where he went. He had only went about a hundred yards and was just standing there. I left him and went back to where I had shot at him. I found the arrow and it was covered in a lot of blood but was darker than I wanted it to be. I figured I must have hit him in the liver. I went back to check on him and he had walked about 250 yards away and layed down in the open with his head held low. I figured I would leave him for a few hours just to be sure. I went back and got my boots and went to get a buddy to help me. By the time we returned it was quite dark and we had a hard time locating him in the dark with the flashlights. He was dead and was already cool and stiff so he must have died right after I left. He is not the original one I was after but I had said I would take which ever gave me the first chance. I haven't put a tape to him yet but I doubt he will score real well. He is an 8X7 including the browtines and he almost grew a drop tine. He has a lot of character which is what I liked.

He didn't look like he would score that high to me. it was his great mass that pushed him over the 200" mark. There are a couple of small points on his right side that might be an inch or just over but I didn't include them.

Here is the only photo I had of him. It is a long shot but he still looked pretty impressive. The big buck with the double kickers is the one in front of him.

Great buck! I fear that if I had that within 30-35 yards that I'd be having a total adrenalin overdose!

What a cool looking buck, thanks for sharing some cool pics. I would have never guessed he'd score that big. Seems to be my downfall these last few years, I have underestimated some great bucks. Thanks again for sharing.
