201 archery ???

That would depend on how many points you (assume asking for yourself?) are sitting on and how soon you 'need' to hunt or how long you are willing to wait. Point total sitting on?

Doesnt really matter how good of an elk caller one is in my opinion. What does matter is how many points you have? are you a resident or non resident? you strictly an archery guy? These are the questions I would ask before a guy can give you a very good answer. If you strictly want a 340 class bull and your a non resident who wants to do a self guided hunt you dont have a lot of choice other than 201 and if you do hunt it theres a good chance you wont kill a 340 bull. If your a non resident without any points or less than about 14 points your wasting your time trying to draw 201 because there is a good chance you wont live long enough. If your a resident and dont mind hunting rifle you have better places to go. If you want a 340 bull and can afford to do a guided hunt you have better options too. Need more info to help ya.

Guys come on. I wouldn't be asking if my buddy didn't have the points to draw 201 archery as a resident. When you have a bow in your hand it does matter how good of a caller you are. I'm asking simply should my friend put in for the archery hunt or wait for the early rifle which it may take years to catch. Or muzzleloader? We know how many points it takes to draw each.
Elkcrzy1, please enlighten us a better place to go!

Jared, You asked a question lacking most of the needed details to know how to answer.

Now it is more clear that your question was about season choices (within 201 only) instead of 'what' archery unit is best for a 340 which is what many would have assumed. Also the mention of 'expert caller' as if it factored in to the equation (it doesn't?) throws a guy off a bit. One does not hear guys portray themselves as expert callers too often.

Since the elk do not migrate between units for the season options in 201, weapon does not matter as the same bulls will be there. Just comes down to how much 'certainty' in the outcome of a dead big bull your friend needs versus simply doing the hunt type he enjoys the most. It is obviuously far easier to kill a bull, especially one that "must" be on the top end for a unit, during the early rifle so have your friend sit it out and wait if the only goal is 340+ inches on the ground and he does not value a bow kill more (even if it is a bit smaller of a bull) than a rifle kill. Would be a shame to burn those points and always have regrets. For example a lot of supposedly serious bowhunters put in for Colo Rifle mooose rather than archery seasons because they can not stand the thought of potential failure to harvest on their OIL tag. Your friend just needs to be honest with himself and he will not need help from strangers on the internet.

When I draw NW Colo it will be the archery hunt because a rifle rut hunt just does not turn the crank. To each his own. Good luck.

In a unit with a high population of bulls, I don't think calling is that effective. There is bugling in every direction, why do the bulls care about your call, no matter how good you are. They can have a fight in any direction they want to go.

JC,
These guys crack me up. Yes I think it is a good unit for a chance at a 340+ bull with a bow. If I had the points I would definitely put in for it. Calling does matter and being good makes a difference. I have hunted it in the bow hunt and the rifle with buddys and have called in a TON of bulls and had opportunities at some great bulls. We killed some good bulls, 337, 332, had some misses and misunderstandings, and a sweet fun hunt. So no matter what your buddy ends up doing have fun and Good luck.
