Finally, I drew a San Juan Muzz tag with 15 resident points. Figured the odds were going to be very good for me this year and the hunt dates rock. Plus I am not getting any younger, should be a hunt of a lifetime.

Tbuck,
congrats! I Drew the tag with 15 pts this year as well. I think we are in for a fun trip. I so excited, you'd think the hunt was tommarrow.

Me Three....

Congrats guys!
I'm so stoked I've got out the maps, bought an new tent and will probably go shooting tommorrow!

Hey Guys - My dad also drew this tag. He had 15 points so we thought that his chances would be good this year. I have been down there during the last week of Sept and it was incredible to hear and see all of the activity going on. My only concern is keeping my dad from not shooting the first bull he sees, I do not think that he can hold back. I told him that I will be carrying his primers for the first couple of days. Good luck to all and save one for my dad.

Hey guys, am I to understand that the archery spike hunters can shoot cows on the San Juan this year. I have been a little confused at this, because in the other premium units, they can only shoot spikes. Confusing, because the bull to cow ratio down there is already out of wack.
I am a little worried as to what the extra pressure will do to the bulls. They have never been pressured like they will this year. Even though they won't be hunting big bulls, all of those archery hunters will be stomping throught the timber and stiring things up for weeks before we get there.

Should be a good hunt either way.

Hopefully you wont have too much to worry about. The MZ is nice because there are so few elk hunters. During my hunt in 2007 I was never in competition with anyone and actually didn't see another hunter for several days during the hunt. KK will hook you up with the spot to be in. He had me on bulls every day. I just sucked at shooting straight. (Yes I did harvest a 340 bull) Awesome, Awesome, Awesome

Congrats carbonnation, high5 and ryan555'dad. I feel like it was about my turn as you guys probably do as well. If I would have continued to waite out the rifle hunt and I was not lucky I could have waited another 8 years or so, which about the same time as all the spikes that are going to get killed this year would have been reaching their prime. Plus the hunt dates rock. I live in Moab and have been hunting deer with a muzz on the Blues for a while now and I have seen numerous great bulls every year. Last year towards the end of the hunt bulls just started showing up all over as the rut got hotter and hotter. I am heading down this weekend for a turkey hunt and it will just be the start of a year full of scouting. I hope the archery hunters don't put to much preassure on the big boys. Most people will give up chasing spikes once they realize how steep the county really is. Good luck guys on getting your MONSTER!

Dave, Have not heard from you forever. How have you been?

Tbuck, how long does it take you to get from Moab into the areas that you are hunting. I have not been down there for 10 years and can't remember travel times. I want to plan some trips, and would like to know how long I will be driving.

It's basically an hour to Monticello and another 20 min or so to Blanding. So it depends on the side you are planning on going to. If you hunt the Blues either from the Blanding side or the Monticello side it's a bit closer than if you plan on going out to the Elk Ridge part. That could be another hour or so depending on where you go and what you are driving.
