Bookcliffs Bitter Creek Late Season Elk

A buddy drew the Bookcliffs Bitter Creek late season elk tag and needs some advice from those who have drawn the same tag. We know the Bookcliffs fairly well, but we don't know how hard the elk are to find during those later dates.

For those who don't know, this is the road area.

I'm heading out there to help a buddy of mine who drew the muzzle tag this Sept. I'll try and get in touch with you once we get back and let you know how it went. I don't think the elk move that far to winter. I've found sheds right where we plan on hunting and that's during the rut, so they shouldn't be too far?

I helped a cousin on that hunt last year, just look in the big open burns, and grassy areas at first light, and right before dark. They are bunched up in big groups as well.

Here is the bull he took, 315 as is with about 15"s broken (cant see in the pic but there was a extra broke off, and his third on the the other side was broke in the velvet and made a cool looking drop point.)

I had the hunt last year, you can PM me if you want more info but it wasn't too hard to find the elk. It was hard to find a good bull however. Tons and Tons of rags. The hardest thing seemed to be was finding bulls that weren't busted up. It's also more of a pain in the arse that the bulls are hanging around the cows somewhat. It makes you stop and get out the spotting scope damn near every 10 minutes to verify if a large bull was around or not.

Overall it was a fun hunt, we looked at over 150 bulls in 3 days of hunting. I did end up missing a bull that was over 380 that will haunt me to my dying day but would love to have that tag again some day.

Helped kill a 434" bull out there a few years ago. Saw a few other pretty good bulls. Glass the out of the way burns Early!
