I'm looking for a good place to go bow hunting for elk and deer in colorado. I would like to use an outfitter but I'm not against finding some place good to go on my own. We have a party of about four and one of the guys is a 65 yr. We have been to Montana and Wyoming and looking for some place new and a bit cheaper because the tags are getting so expensive. Anyone got good suggestions.

Bearcat Stables does drop camps through all seasons. not guided but still in a good area where you can hunt how you want but still be in a good area check them out at BEARCATSTABLES.COM

Im not 100% sure but you will have to call and ask for Gavin and he will let you know all you need to know (970)376-4647 if Gavin is not there then it will be a guy named Leeds he is the CO-Owner and can either give you Gavins personal number or give you all the information. i dont think it is too radically expensive but th. y do alot and will pack out your animals to

$MAVERICK$

You might also check out Louisiana Purchase Ranch near Meeker. This would be a great spot for your 65-year-old member. I met these guys at our Elk Foundation banquet in April...great group and I would absolutely feel comfortable going with them.

If you want a DIY hunt got trespass hunts in NW CO, archery tags for elk and antelope are avaialble over counter, sorry deer are not. Price for a combo hunt is $1000 for a trespass fee, www.flandersranch.com

Rocky Mountain Ranches, he's got a link on this website

Larry Bishop is the guys name and he does a great job on DIY trespass hunts and is reasonable..

I've hunted with him twice and hope to again

good luck!!

There is a wide range of outfitted hunts in Colorado.

1) High end trophy quality private ranches like the Hill Ranch that all the TV guys hunt on, probably $8,000 to $10,000.
2) Lower end private land, 5 X 5 hunt, usually lots of game, low pressure. $3,000 to $5,000.
3) Public land horseback, tent camp, usually low success, many hunters, although archery would be less crowded. You are paying to hunt where everyone else is hunting for free. $3,000 to $4,000.
5) Private land trespass fee, a good deal if you have some experience, I haven't hunted with Rocky Mountain Ranches but I have seen several good recommendations for them. $1,000 to $2,000.
6) Public land drop camp, usually low success, but sometimes you have guys that go back to the same camp every year that do pretty good. $1,500 to $1,800.
7) Public land DIY, Thousands of people do this every year usually with low success unless they already know the area or are able to do pre-season scouting.

Personally if I wasn't going to do the high end hunt I would look at the private land fully guided or private land tresspass hunt. Whether successful or not I think you will have a better hunting experience, you will see a lot more game and not be bothered by other hunters.

Many areas have over the counter archery elk but all mule deer is a draw so too late this year for a mule deer tag unless you buy a land owner tag which are usually expensive.

Winchester I sent you a PM
