LAST EDITED ON Aug-22-09 AT 08:59PM (MST)[p]Well, I didn't kill an elk this weekend, but we got some cool footage. I was really debating on attacking the bigger bull here. It's early in the hunt and he's right about on the border of the size I'm looking for. Finally decided to go for it after some discussion. My plan was working perfectly and he was feeding his way right....toward...me.... (about 60 yards away through the trees) until they changed their route and cut down wind of me. The gig was up, the smaller of the two smelled me (I could have shot him at 30 yards) and they were gone. It was a rush, though. My buddy was filming the elk while I was making the stalk. In a few hours of scouting a new place a friend was gracious enough to show me, we saw about 10 big mature 6 point bulls, and zero other people. They were already bugling and we got them to answer our calls. I think in another week or two we'll really be able to get them amped up and screaming (if one hasn't hit the dirt yet).
These are the two I put the sneak on. It's a long clip. You don't have to watch the whole thing to get the idea. One nice bull and one medium-small one.
Here is the bigger of the two walking through the trees
And another smaller bull we found feeding on a ridge. I called to him a time or two just to mess with him.
I'd also like to hear what you guys thought the bigger elk scored.
