LAST EDITED ON Sep-17-09 AT 11:52AM (MST)[p]I could not believe what I saw today in Vernal. Coming from the west side of town a guy driving a jeep wrangler had a 300 class bull elk head tied on the front of his bumper. I was disappointed that someone would display their trophy this way.
Guys.... I tried to turn around and get a picture but I was unable to. As sportsman I think we should be tasteful as how we display our trophys.

Dude, don't get too upset about it. There are more important things worthy of being upset over. I'm sure there are varying opinions on the subject, but I personally don't have any problem whatsoever with it. When I kill a nice elk or deer, I am proud as hell and like to show it off a little. As a hunter and sportsman, I also enjoy seeing rigs driving down the road with racks or heads strapped down in the Fall. This damn country is getting way too touchy-feely. Sooooo afraid of offending someone. I guess we should all wait until the cover of night when we can go out with an enclosed trailer or canopy to make sure that nobody sees a dead animal come off the mountain during a legal hunting season. Man, if you kill a nice bull and want to parade it around town, go for it. I'll shake your hand if I see you and tell you congratulations. All this being said, I have never been to Vernal so I don't know the situation there.

I think sadam would do that kind of stuff when he decapitated a transgressor. Its best to have a little blood dripping, just kiddin. We have a large portion of rednecks in this sport. It will probably get more people who see it to join PITA, but ignorance is bliss. It just goes with the territory.

I personally like to see a big ole muley or elk rack in the fall just like every other guy but... I think we need to remember that we need to have respect for the animals. To process the meat and have it in a cooler and the rack to be displayed in the back as we come off the hill into town is one thing but to have all the blood and head be displayed like that is WRONG. This is exactly what gives sportsman a bad name. I think what utahelk1 is trying to find out is the ethical aspect of this behavior. I'm against doing that but this is AMERICA and it's a free country!

*Remember it's all about elk baby!!!*

i'm with you blacktailer i am so sick of people throwing a fit, and getting offended, i'm offended when when i smell those freakin hippie enviros who don't shower or wash there hair the stinky freakin punks. used to be all animals came out one the hood and down into town for people to admire. people were proud of the animals they hunted, and you should be, if your embarrassed about taking an animal stay out of the mounatins one less guy won't hurt my feelings. i could go off all day on these punks

I didn't say thats the worst thing I've seen in the basin. Like you said I live in the basin! I like to see hunters show off their trophy. Is there an ethical way of doing it? I think that there is.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-17-09 AT 10:39AM (MST)[p]must be an old school guy! back in the old days they strapped it where ever they could to get it home.im not sure whether that is the right or wrong thing these days.not very classy lol... but i will have to say i kinda chuckled a little that someone did that.i would never do that.wish you got a pic of it. maybe he just hit it and it stuck on like a bug!lol
its probably not the most repectable thing to do but im sick of everyone catering to the antis this maybe a bit extreme.
if anyone else seen this or infact was you post a pic i wanna see it!

I'm mad too....just think a 300 class bull.....geeze it makes us look like we don't have mega monsters here in the basin. I wish people from the basin would at least wait till they killed a 350" bull before they did this non-sense.:)

Here is a similar example:

I think it looks cool as hell if it is done right. On the front bumper, however, isn't quite as tasteful.

By the way, this picture was also taken in Vernal, and it is my bull, my wheels. This was the best way to transport my antlers, it may have fit inside, but the smell kept me from taking that route.

Lets see more pictures of that rack.

That looks good up there. I bet you got a lot of lookers on the freeway.

Very classy and nicely done. Great bull!

Only a picture of the one this morning would describe how poorly it was being displayed. IMO

Was it a non typical bull? I think I saw the same one and it is way cool on the one side. If it is the same one it is more like a 350 bull their is all kinds of trash on the one side, just a big 5 on the other.

WAS THIS BULL KILLED ON THE BOOK CLIFFS I AM GOING THERE FOR MY MUZZLELOADER TAG ON MONDAY AND CANT WAIT

the only thing that concerns me is the meat is getting way hot. Other than that, who cares?

Bull was killed in the Book Cliffs roadless unit with a bow, it is not a non-typical, it's a 353 6x6 typical. And I did get a lot of looks on the highway, almost caused one guy to leave the road.
Thanks for all the praise, it was a really tough year to do archery, and I'm glad I was able to fill my LE tag, I know a lot of people who were not so fortunate.
I apologize for taking away from the original post, was not my intention.

Jason

Atta boy Jason. I was wondering when I would see that thing on MM. Awesome job this year. It was tough up there this year with the hot weather. You definetely over achieved for the conditions. Lots of archery tag soup on the roadless this year..

LMAO! So true, Catman. I agree.

I grew up in Western PA and we always hunt our deer on the front pourch. We would ride around town and look at all the bucks. We were proud to have one hangng in those days. I can also remember having a black bear strapped to the top of my VW rabbit riding don Va Beach Blvd in Va Beach. No place inside for it to fit. I hate trying tom placate the antis. For me I see no disrespect with the head and horns on a vehicle.

I saw the same jack ass in roosvelt i can' tbelive someone would be that stupid score one for anti hunters!! Way to make the rest of us look stupid!!

Deliver the picture Fed-Ex Boy

Home already?
Drinking last night?
We'd like to hear a story & see a picture please.
Or are you gonna deliver the evidence & show me?
Time to Fess up!

we are YoungCountry, we like all kinds
of music and people, 'cause we do draw some lines'
no our hair is not orange,we don't wear chains and spikes
but we know how to have fun come Saturday night

RE: Deliver the picture Fed-Ex Boy

Now thats better! If you're gonna tie an elk rack to your vehicle at least make him a 350". Theres a solution gentlemen..buy a pickup!!! ha-ha I killed one one year and I took an "83 Buick Skylark to elk camp. No way was that thing going to fit in my Grandmothers car!!

RE: Deliver the picture Fed-Ex Boy

OK, come on somebody, post the pic of the bull on top of the car from Montana! LOL

I love to see antlers in the fall!!
I think it can be done tastefully.
I actually think hunters should take some pride in the animal/hunt and wear their orange or camo, give good tips at restaurants, be polite at gas stations, etc.
This can go a long way for the sport when done right.

I try to keep the carcass etc from view, I put a trash bag over the head so only the antlers show.
I have had lots of honks and thumbs up from men, women, and kids over the years.

Youngcountry

I didn't get a picture......and I'm not back from hunting. I haven't started. Just scouting in my jeep haha

RE: Youngcountry

Hazmat,
Yes if they are that small...put em in the back:) If they are larger...guess the hood is gonna have to work :)

RE: Youngcountry

yeah -stuffed in the back of a jeep - hide on- 2-3 hrs - strapped on top a car 3-4 hr drive home in 90-+ degree weather - cooking the elk and don't even know it - by the time they get home the meat is spoiled - stinks - well all you hunters know - what a waste - oh well hate to see it happening but most hunters aren't this bad but the few who call themselves hunters and then pull this crap - makes us all look bad ! then they wonder why anyone would eat elk meat - the one they brought home was real gamey - go figure - MM

Good for him!

The hunter has the right to put whatever the h3ll he wants on his pickup. It's called the constitution guys. Just like the liberals can put the OBAMA stickers on their bumpers..... I can put a buck/bull/whatever on my front bumper. I just hope he had a big 5hi7 eatin' grin on his face and was practicing his constitutional right to bear arms.
What is disappointing/embarrassing is sportsmen who are to embarrassed or ashamed or whatever to show the public what it is that they enjoy doing. That they ENJOY the opportunity to go harvest OUR RENEWABLE natural resource. AND in the process support the local economy, pay taxes, practice a healty lifestyle. What a shame that their are sportsmen out there who are so backed into a corner by some PETA liberal blood fearin' anti-hunter that they won't display what they have worked so hard to accomplish. SAD!
Please.... if you are traveling through central Utah and have harvested anything...... A book elk, trophy muley, goat, cow, doe, jackrabbit... go ahead and display it. I want to see it... and I want to know that I have some fellow countrymen who are proud of their personal choices.
I'm not a big fan of golf. In fact I think it's a waste of time and resources.... land that could be growin' good crops or good wildlife turned to turf so somebody can hit little white balls into holes. But I dont' expect Tiger Woods to hide his trophies in fear that I am going to harass him for swinging a club.

Whatever... go hide your two by three muley rack in the back of your 25 mpg crossover and drive back to the metropolis where you can sneak your trophy home from the taxidermist and hide it in your basement. lol No wonder hunting is in trouble. All the hunters are becoming politically correct socialists.

Oh and don't forget to take and pass your Hunter's Ethics course.... Just another way of making sure that you don't "offend" anybody.
The way I see it Utah's at a serious crossroads.. We either man up and say.... This is how we do it.. and it works and it's sustainable and it supports our economy and it's good.... or we crawl on our bellys and wait for the liberals to wash over us.. cause it's coming. Your sons and grandsons will probably be the last ones that will ever 'legally' hunt in this state.
We should all think about why the original settlers in this country came here. Does Robin Hood ring a bell? Kings Deer? Won't be long guys.. We're letting it happen. How many forests are already closed to your access?
Somebody please kick this soapbox out from under me.....

GROW UP AND HUNT!!!!!!!

RE: Good for him!

So NEBSY tell me how you really feel.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

go take the course

I hate to point this out but its because of hunters with a Nebsy attitude that the DWR came up with a mandatory hunters ethics course.

RE: go take the course

R U serious? It is not because of people like me. It is because of the liberal walt disney raised pansies that can't accept that what they are eating for dinner tonight was running around a few weeks ago that we have to take hunter ethics courses. It's not because of any hunters faults. Wow... how shallow minded does one have to be to not see what has happened to america's youth. How protected are your children? Have they ever observed an animal being killed.....(yes I said it) and cut up into FOOD? It actually happens kids... animals die so that you can eat. And it's O!K!

RE: go take the course

My family is co-owner of registered black angus ranch. My kids know where our meat comes from. After we kill a steer do we cut its head off and stick it on the front of the truck and go drive around town?? No, we don't! Goodbye Nebsy

RE: go take the course

I congratulate you on maintaining that western lifestyle and that your kids have that amazing opportunity. It is a rarity in this day. I would like nothing more than for my children to have the same. Unfortunately too many children have grown up away from that and now are 'offended' by the site of such things.
If one of your steers was grand champ at the state fair would you not be proud of the animal and want to show it? Isn't that what the idea of the fair is? How long 'til PETA convinces the populace that it is 'unethical' for you to show steers? Because they're going to be slaughtered as soon as the show's over. Are the animals more or less respected?
I choose not to hide behind somebody else's 'ethics'.

Hello Utahelk1 isn't that a bit of a double standard?

RE: go take the course

I know if a guy wraps his animal in black plastic for a few days in the sun....it sure seems to tenderize the meat :)
Utahelk1 do you drive a fedex truck?

RE: go take the course

Ya, I see your point here so think I am going to slaughter my grand champion, blue ribbon steer and stuff it in the back of my Yugo. I will then drive around town, tooting my horn and yelling out the window to every chick I see "Look at my meat"!

30-30

RE: go take the course

The great thing is that I can 'pass' the ethics course on friday and on saturday I can strap a bloody rack on top of my hood and drive where I please. God bless america.....

RE: go take the course

LAST EDITED ON Sep-22-09 AT 01:28PM (MST)[p]It appears I have you calmed down a bit Nebsy. So I will say I like how you stand up for what you believe. I have a Dutton tag this year and for you (and me) I will put my bulls horns where people can see them. (not on the front of my truck though) When I come through central utah I will look for you.

Catman you guessed it. I like the black plastic bag that was funny! Where is your sibling? You tell him I want help on Dutton!

RE: go take the course

Oh you unethical man you!!!!!

*I hope you all can taste the sarcasm*

Good luck with your dutton hunt. A lot of tags there this year. I wouldn't pass anything over 340 up that's intact.

RE: go take the course

Hey JACO,
What do you mean you couldn't put those antlers in the car because of the smell??? That's what I think its gonna smell like in heaven!! Bull elk piss!!!!!!! YEAH baby!!!!
