Shot this bull during the second rifle season in Colorado area 5 near the continental divide. Got him wednesday morning after 4 days of hard hunting but not seeing a thing. No one wanted to hunt that morning because frankly we hadn't seen a thing in the past 4 days. But I decided to get up that morning and hunt. I left camp on foot and just figured I'd do some glassing and scouting. After hiking for about an hour I decided to go straight up a ridge. About an half hour later I see some grass movement in an opening 3/4 of the way up the ridge. All of a sudden I can see what looks like horn movement and a big body just feeding accross in a opening. He is straight up hill from me but doesn't see or smell me. I found him in my scope and the rest is history. I am almost embarrassed to say that I have been hunting 9 years for Elk and this is my first one. After spending the rest of the day getting him out we ended up killing two cows the following morning.

Haha, the photo didn't show up when I posted the first message, so my intended smart-ass-ness wasn't even that. Nice job!

No problem, like I said in 9 years I have never had to post a picture so this is new to me :)

Congrats, glad you went out on wednesday huh?

Congrats on your first and also to your buddies and their cows. That's a lot of great eatin layin on the ground.

Just curious but I always assumed that there was lots of snow during the rifle seasons out there. When did you all get snow this year?

Rob

Congratulations. I always like to hear stories where a guy doesn't give up and it eventually pays off for him. That is what its all about.

Congrats on a very nice first bull. Looks like hunting that extra bit harder paid off well for you and your group. That's a pretty great season for anyone and one hell of a successful hunt. Your freezers must be completely full of prime eating.

Congrats on your first I'm sure it won't be your last! I wouldn't sweat the 9 years. I've been trying to kill a bull with my bow now for 29 years and haven't gotten it done. Talk about embarrassing :(

Cheers,
Pete

So, when you went back to let the others know you had killed a bull, did they believe you?? That's the best part, when your hunting party sleeps in and you make them pay by bringing home the bacon! Job well done and I hope you have many more opportunities in the field.

CONGRATS on your first elk, you guys are now ELKAHOLIC'S for the rest of your lives! also will bet you will be up@going waaay before daylight from now on!

RobC, there was 2 foot of snow when we got there friday but it was already melting and by midweek it was mostly gone except for high elevations

I hunted 8 years at times with bow and rifle before I killed my first bull. Then two years later I killed one with a bow / ML / and rifle in the same year, I remember thinking this is just too easy. A couple of years after that I killed an antelope in WY in the morning and a bull with a bow in Utah that evening. My point, all those years has taught you to be an elk killer, you have earned your stripes and it shows by bustin your ass when everyone else stayed in bed ? elk hunting is a BELIEVERS game, congrats on a wonderful bull and getting that monkey off your back.
