I am going this weekend to unit 33 to hunt couse deer. My buddy and I are going to try and go to a different area from Chimney Rock where we went last year. We have been looking at the monument area (just outside the monument to the west) Any body have any luck in this area or suggestion? Any and all help is appreciated. Happy hunting, Brian

Brian, I have only hunted pigs in this unit, but last year we saw alot of bucks and a couple shooters. I dont know the area you are talking about, I will look it up on the map so I can see, then I will post something if it is close to where I was hunting last year for pigs. Hope you do well..... Thanks Bura. My buddy shot a buck last year near chimney rock that missed the book by 5 points he says. I thought it was a mighty fine buck and a good representative head of the species. Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated. Brian

Brian,

You might try going into Happy Valley on the southeast side of the Rincons, just north of Benson. Just out of curiosity, why don't you want to hunt near Chimney Rock? I hunted there during archery deer season and saw several deer in the short amount of time I had to hunt (a monsoon chased me out of there). The big problem around the monument is access. Hope this helps.

It was not really my descision to hunt away from chimney rock. I am hunting with some friends and it is kind of "tier" hunt and I was invited. Plus I am always looking for new territory. I liked the Chimney rock area and my buddy shot a very nice deer there last year but it was kind of crowded. I have heard that access around the munument is tight but ohh well. Hopefully we'll do ok. I will hunt long and hard. Also, last year someone came into our camp (on a different hunt for javelina) and moved our tent andrummaged through our things. It kind of soiled the area for me. I know it could happen anywhere but it just kind of sucks ya know. Brian

I was out in the Catalinas this morning. Saw 7 or 8 bucks and 10 or 11 does. It was hard to keep them all straight, they were moving around alot. 2 decent bucks (85 incher and a 90 incher). It should be a good hunt this year, find water and you will find the deer. Some friends of mine scouted the Rincons near the monument last weekend and saw lots of little 3 pointers. Good luck!! ;-)

thanks for the help. I went to unit 33 with lots of anicipation. I did see a small two by two and took a shot and missed. I cant believe I missed at only 85 yards. But I did have second shot and the buck dropped down over the side of the mountain. I did see lots of other deer including mule deer ad some javelina. No lions but did manage to see some tracks. All in all it was a good time spent with good people. Thanks again for the tips and suggestions. Brian

I was wondering...where did you see the javelina? I put in for the 33/37B archery javelina tag.
Thanks
Matt

Brian, glad you had a good time. Too bad you didnt get that buck, but there is always another time...... Thanks, Allen......

Dodger, I saw the pigs near happy valley on the south side of the Rincon Mtns. The place was behind a locked gate andI was invited to go along (dont know who to direct you to for permission.) But last year I hunted couse deer just north of Chimney rock, in unit 33 and saw lots of sign and tracks and beds. I never saw the pigs but did see fresh fedding areas all directly north of chimney rock. All the other hunters in our group (4 total) did see herds of pigs. Hope this helps. Brian

mmbeeeer: Thanks for the information. My brother shot his pig just east of Chimney rock last year. That was definitely one of the areas I was going to scout. Saw the same thing last year when I was hunting out there. Lots of sign but no pigs, then everyone I talked to that was deer hunting would tell me, "I just saw a herd of 10 on that hill." It seems to go like that though, looking for deer, see javelina; looking for javelina and see deer. Again, thanks for the information.

Good luck on the hunt. I my try and get a left over permit for the HAM hunt in that same unit. Who knows, maybe I'll see you out there. Brian
