I found some old hunting photos of my Grandpa from the 1946 Idaho deer hunt. He lived in SE Idaho in Clifton, which is near Preston, and hunted in that area. He shot lots of good deer over the years but didn't take hardly any photos and never mounted anything. I enjoy the old time photos so I thought I would share these. There isn't a good straight on photo of this buck, but it looks to be a 30" class buck.

Here is my Grandpa on the left, with one of his brothers loading the deer into the trunk.

Here is what it said on the back of the photo, I think somebody was skipping out on Sunday School :)

From the writing on the back, looks like they got it on the way home from church.

Wonder where that old Ford is now??

Brian,

I could have guessed you'd be interested in the car. I was wondering the same thing.

I think they was on the way to church, and stopped to kill this Great buck.(killed at Church time)

Thanks for sharing those wonderful photos. 1946.....maybe October? A little over a year after WWII ended. Happy days for a lot of folks.

There were alot of old monster bucks waiting to be killed in 1946. Most of the hunting age men had been saving this country for the previous 5 years. What a time it would have been to live then. We are all fat and spoiled now.

Brian....I was still in the planning stage. My sister was born in 1946 though.

D13er.....you're right. Plus most of the remaining boys here at home were under strict gas rationing which left little for hunting. There was a machine shop here in town that had a few HUGE mule deer hanging on the walls. I talked to the owner of these magnificent heads. They were all killed during the war years. His shop had a contract with the military so he was issued more coupons for gas, which enabled him to go hunting in Southern Idaho.
