I don't have enough points to benefit from point banking, but just curious how many of you out there are going to take advantage of the point banking?

I think its a very small percentage that are NOT banking every point they can.

Please explain the definition of "point banking" and which state you're discussing. (Maybe I'm doing and just don't know it.) :)

Are you talkimg about just buying a bonus point, with no intention of drawing a tag? If so, my pop's and I are and have been doing that for years. If that is not what you are talking about, please clarify.

Good Luck

TxHunter,

We decided not to bank points this year. Going to try to burn all our deer points on a quality unit. Hope to do the same with elk in a year or so. IF CDW decides to allow point banking again next year we might try to draw a lower point hunt and bank some elk points??? Good luck in the draws.

TXhunter,

I am on the fence, can't decide yet. Might bank a few and go for an archery hunt in 61. Or burn them and do quality rifle hunt. Still undecided.
Good luck in the draws!

TX,

As every year goes you have to get more points. This year I actually tried the draw for Elk in Wyoming got a point no hunt., Banked a point for deer.
Utah Draw for Elk do not know yet, most likey another point. Points only for deer and goats.
Nevada I will try to draw deer, elk and goat and probably more points (rebuilding drew deer two years ago.)
Colorado more Points.
Arizona try the draw get points.
California try to draw Elk and Antelope bank deer.
The best option this year is Oregon with 8 deer and 10 antelope points I might even get something.
Good luck to all.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I am talking about Colorado only. Normally, if you put in for a hunt and get drawn, your PREFERENCE points drop to 0. So if you have 10 points and draw a tag that only requires 2 points, you lose the other 8 points. However, this year Colorado is experimenting with letting people keep the remaining points in an attempt to lower the people with lots of points and since they changed the rules on us, to allow us to get maybe 2 hunts instead of one if we have lots of points.

So, if you have 10 points and draw a tag that takes 2 points, they will deduct the 2 points, plus 1 (cost of point banking) and you will have 7 points left for next year. If you draw a tag that takes 4 points, they take 4 plus 1 and you will have 5 left for next year.

This is currently on the books for this year only. They may or may not extend it to future years depending on how it changes things.

Yes, going to take advantage and hunt at least 2 years in a row in god areas.

Planning on doing this for deer this year... maybe... haven't hunted deer in years so I could collect for a nice unit. Now I could actually go this year AND in a year or two after that.

I hope they continue it, but I REALLY don't like that they take an extra point just for the "privilege".

But at least a PP doesn't cost $50 like it does in WY. Now THAT sucks!

Txhunter58,

Thanx for clarifying that. I knew CO changed there system but I hadn't gotten into all of the regs yet.

I have 13 for elk, and 5 for deer, in CO and I am leaning heavily toward applying for more points. What would you do if you were me?

Thanx!

LAST EDITED ON Mar-15-06 AT 07:42PM (MST)[p]If I were a resident, I would keep building points.

However, since I am a nonresident if I were in your position, I would probably look seriously at point banking.

You may already know this, but they changed the rules big time for nonresidents this year. The normal draws are now capped at 35% of the tags for nonresidents, however, the premium units are now capped at 20%. A premium unit is any unit that took at least 5 points for residents to draw a tag for the last 3 years. So you chances on a premium unit just got cut in half and the points required to draw went up big time.

txhunter58,

True but there can't be that many people above me. for the whole NR group I think there's around 943 people in front of me and 653 tied with me. A chunk of them will probably point bank, some of them will get drawn, a few will miss the drawing, some will just be getting to old to hunt(heck...they been appying for 15 to 20 years already), 1 or 2 will turn into PETA people and a few will probably die off (hopefully the PETA people). :) Right now I'm leaning to staying on track...hold the course.

How many points do you have and what are your plans?

GH

One thing to watch out for: If a unit has 40 tags and traditionally takes 2 points to be guaranteed to draw and 40 people with 5 points or more end up apply for the hunt to take advantage of the point banking thing...guess what...they all lose 5 points in the draw!

I think you will see a jump in the points required for the 2-5 point units because of some of the high point holders taking advantage of the banking program and some of these people will end up spending more points than they had planned on. The 6+ point units will likely see a reduction in points required to draw.

Last year the Gunnison units went up substantially, the idea of point banking was thought up to reduce the point creep. I don't have enough points to benefit from it but I don't believe many units will require the same amount of points due to the new 4th seasons, point banking and the new NR allotment. It will a crap shoot at the best

Obviously pt banking is a great deal if you have a bunch of pts and want to use them on multiple hunts but if you are like me and hunt units that don't take a whole lot of pts it may end up a bumb deal! I have a feeling low pref pt units are going to be the ones doing the "creeping" in the next couple years!

I have 13 points for elk, and put in for "points-only". With deer(7 PTS), I'm not sure what I'll do. I agree with Oregon; this year it's anybody's guess.

Pinenut, Res. determine the number of pts. to draw into a unit. Now this year res. have better draw odds for better units. I don't see much movement so to speak, except for 4th season.

Griz. I like your thought process. I'm hoping everyone with more than 11 elk points draws a lesser tag. with the 80/20 split, they should all put in for any elk tag they can get. That will make my 12 points next year worth alot more. If Co. would commit to point banking for the next 5 years, I would burn them 2 at a time and have an excellent archery elk hunt for each of the next 5 years. I can't get a bull tag in my unit any more. I just put in for a cow tag as my second choice and I'll hope my son gets a bull in the same unit. He'll draw with his 2 points. We've filled the last 42 tags we've drawn in the unit since "00" but we can't get the either sex tag on the first hunt as a second choice anymore so about 35 of those animals were cows.

Califelkslayer,

It sounds like your family and friends are getting pretty accustom to having elk in the freezer...42 filled elk tags!!! I want to hunt with you! :)

I just hope everybody with more than 12 points does the point-bank thing. Maybe it'll make up for the one year I missed when they moved the application deadline up about 5 years ago. DOOHH!!! (I'm still can't forgive myself on that one.)

Good luck.

Well I,ve got 14 for elk and I,m just going to hang in there for another 7 or 8 years and see what happens...Devlin

I have 14 points and considered archery 61 to save a few over 10 or 201.

Also, I had a deer tag there several years ago and kind of know it. It is also very easy to hunt.

I don't see how you all can save points for so long? I guess I'm too impatient. I have 1 point, which is burning a hole in my pocket, and I'd hate to have to face the thought of waiting 7+ years before going. Maybe I'm just impatient because whenever I do get to go, it will be my first out of state hunt on big game. My hat's off to those who can accumulate the large number points!

I got 9 elk and 8 deer. But I'm going to put in for the best unit I can. I really doubt I'll draw but as soon as I can I'm burning these points on the best unit available and getting out.
