We were bowhunting last weekend in Arizona for Javelina! 3 got shot, but during the hunt we come along a mule deer hunter. He claims he filmed a 30 inch buck not far from roosevelt lake. He was excited. So he showed me the film 23 or 24 inch buck going away. Of course I agreed that it would make buck as a courtesy. I had another friend show me a picture of his 29 inch buck, 21-23 inches wide is all it was. Another told me he shot a 36 inch 9 by 11, I went and measured. 26 inches. So does anyone else run into this problem LOL!!!!!!!

Check out the post titled Who's Believable on page 2 of the mule deer forum. That'll get you laughing and has some of the same types of things you just mentioned.

It's Bush's fault!!!

I've had the same thing happen to me before too, but the guy was talking about the max outside spread, and the buck had cheaters. Only inside spread counts anyway, so now I ask if its outside or inside spread.

You know I have always figured "outside spread" when people talk about antler spread myself.

The outside spread is what is one of the most impressive measurements to my eye.

This guy I know keeps telling me of deer his brother is shooting, a couple mid 30's, one 46 (yeah, I know) and one 41. The guy isn't a hunter so I just nod my head and smile but sometimes it's almost too much.

I agree, outside spread really catches the eye and is most impressive.

I remember once a guy told me of a huge 30 inch buck. When I finally saw pictures it was a decent 23 inch wide 4x4, not much to brag about mass or height, probably a 165 class buck without the cheaters. However with a couple horizontal cheaters on the top making it a 30 inch buck. I guess I was expecting more from his 30 inch claim, it was misleading in my mind and made a good story of a "monster buck", which I wouldn't call it that, but 100% accurate as far as width. This isn't to say that I've also witnessed the occasional exaggeration after the story was passed on and I was getting it third or fourth hand.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-21-07 AT 11:06PM (MST)[p]I have always assumed that people meant outside spread, cheaters and all. Why not give the buck credit for all the bone it grew? I think that b&c has warped our view of "trophy bucks" I think that deductions are ridiculious , the deer still has the antler but it doesn't count?

I have found that deer hunter's stories bear a strong resemblance to fisherman's stories. Have you ever seen a fisherman's ruler.....their 12 inch ruler is about 6 inches long! Their memories are a little short also!

This last deer season my son shot a nice heavy 5x5 23" wide... soon rumors were flying around the camps near us that we had a 30" incher...LMAO

you have no idea how many times ive heard "30" when someone is describing a buck to me. what piss's me off is when you go scout the area and only find a 22" buck running around. i dont believe too many people about the size until i see the deer first hand.

My old hunting buddy did this. He was in my wedding and families have been friends for years, so it was kind of hard to deal with. Claims of 30 inch bucks and 350 bulls, never failed either. It could be opening day and non of us had much luck but he'd passed on numerous 300-325 elk, stories galore!

He's a pretty good hunter and has killed some nice animals , but tends to get a bit excited and adds some to every buck/bull and like I said he's ALWAYS IN THEM. Now I'm 34 and have hunted since I was 8 or 9(of course w/dad), but i'm guessing you all have had days when not much happened let alone seen , due to wind , pressure , wrong areas etc, but not him .
You get the point?

jasn , it dependss , now if it's someone elses buck , than , "of course it's inside spread , but if it's my buck , heck we're stretching the tape to the furthest of antler LOL...
