Oregon Youth hunt

I've put my son in for the Interstate Youth hunt since he was old enough. Last year he was with 3 other non-residents with 3 points and no tags went to the non-residents. No youth non-residents with more points applied. I know one tag went to the outfitter's draw. Is this the case every year? Am I wasting our time? He's eligible to apply for 2 more years. Should I keep trying?

How good is this hunt anyway? I put my daughter in for 4 years until she lost interest in big game so we are 0 for 8 on this hunt. If it's everything I've heard, I might consider trying to buy the outfitter hunt next year. Dates are great and I've been told between the migration and rut, it can be fantastic. Any advice would be appreciated.

My son drew the tag two years ago, It is the only hunt that I know of that you get a chance at a muley rut buck in Oregon with a rifle. It took him 5 points to draw the tag, he was 17 and had been applying since he was 12. It is worth it if you can draw the tag, remember NR's get up to 5% of tags, but not guaranteed 5%. So you don't have much of a chance of drawing until you are maxed out. I haven't looked in the tag book to see what it is but I don't think it is 100% for residents with 5 points, 5 being max before you are too old to hunt. My son took a nice buck and I saw several nice bucks, I think the quality is down from some of the bucks that I saw pictures taken of when it first opened. There are not bucks behind every tree but you can be selective and harvest a nice buck. I enjoyed this hunt tremendously with my son and to me that is what the key is to any hunt, but chances are there for a decent buck. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I had the Youth Tag last year with Kade Hall the Tag will go to a Non-resident this year. Your son Should draw it that hunt can be insane or just a good deer hunt. The buck I had scouted for was shot 2 days prior to the season by the Governors Tag. It really sucked a 210+ grossing buck. It is a great hunt I absolutely loved it. Just depends on what your expectation are for a deer. How old is your son???? with 4 points he stands a chance. There were also 3 other kids with 3 points that applied SO goodluck it is gonna take some if you draw it you will have a great. If you need any help send me a message I will be glad to help out on that hunt.

LAST EDITED ON May-11-06 AT 00:23AM (MST)[p]Dave, thanks for the info. What you're telling me is that this year the tag will go to the draw and next year it will go to the outfitter draw?

My son was 1 of 4 that had 3 pts last year so at least he has a 25% chance this year if nobody gets in that PP'd it last year. I talked to the outfitter that drew last year and he told me the hunt was sold. He was trying to sell me the N.Warner muzzy hunt, self guided.

How can I tell which outfitter draws the hunt as soon as the draw is over next year? I would consider buying the hunt for him if he earns it.

Hunter you talked to me. I am the outfitter that had both of those tags last year. I had a whole heck of alot of tags the guy who ended up with the North Warner shot a 27" 5x5 pretty damn nice buck. send me a PM I will let you know next year what outfitter draws which tags if that will help you out.
