in utah it IS. no matter what people say... the rule reads that the antler must BRANCH ABOVE THE EAR. read real close in the PROC on the spike section. the pictures are accurate, but do not display a senario like this one. i had an earlier post here and some people got pissed because apparently i should have know that even though by definition that bull is a spike it really has one side thats not so i should be ethical and not shoot it... i say... screw that... he's a spike and the other guys are just jealous that i'm eating sweet elk steaks while they enjoy tag soup...

happy hunting!

Legality of it, he is a LEGAL SHOOTER in a spike unit he could be a spike by 20 and be legal. Ethics are debatable but the way I see it, it would be like winning the jackpot on the spike hunt since you would never get a bigger spike in your life and the other bonus is unless it was damage resulting in this freak, you get the side show genetics off the mountain and out of the gene pool helping the herd in the long run. Nice pic, not an every day sight there!

We passed on a 1x5 one year a while back cause we didn't dare trust our memory on what the definition of a spike was, and ever since I've been looking to find myself back in that situation to take the shot. I would shoot it for three reasons, it's a spike, it's a big spike and it needs to be taken out of the gene pool.

Shoot away, Great pictures!

<------<< I love it when the plan comes together.

It depends on what state...Utah-legal, I had an Idaho deer tag a few years back that screwed me up on a "trophy" spike x 3 on the Utah archery hunt. I had looked at thier rule book so many times, and in Idaho anything with one side more than a spike is not legal in a spike unit...well I had the spike x 3 at 18 yards at full draw and just couldn't get the brain to convince me I knew the Utah rule 100% so I didn't want to risk it so I didn't shoot, got back to the truck and looked at the regs and started kicking myself!!!

I guess just make sure of the specific states regs, I know if I come up on one like him next week he will definatly have some carbon coming his way! Good luck if you can hunt him! Nice suprise on the trail cam!
