Clynt,

I have encountered land owners in open Idaho hunt units that charge a trespass fee, so I'm certain you can find one in unit 45. How much are they? The open unit I encountered was in unit 32, not a trophy area and they wanted a onetime $100 dollar fee. My guess is that you'll be paying more. What is it worth? Well that depends on two things: 1. how bad you want to hunt private ground to get a buck and 2. how much money you have.

Here's what I did last year. I found an area that had a huge number of deer all on private land. Then, I went to BLM to get a property map and looked for public land that borders the private in that area. I found one little public "hallway" that fed into an area surrounded on all sides by private land and shot a 205lb 4x5 within 3 hours.

I would suggest hunting around private and not on it, unless of course you have the money to do so and in which case you could buy me a pass too for writing all this. HAHA. Hope it all works out.

There is plenty of public land in this unit and it's not hard to find deer, just spend the appropriate time in the field scouting and figure on putting some miles on your boots, get away from the roads. there are some great bucks taken every year in this unit and most are on public land.

We've always hunted the public land in 45 and like it was mentioned above, there is plenty of it. The private ranchers have nearly shot people for being "near" their land. I've heard of several physical confrontations from ranchers, in fact they hire people to patrol their fence lines during the hunt. As for what they would charge, I know of a guy that paid $2,500 for a trespass fee onto private land above Mormon Resivor. If you've got that kind of money to pay a rancher, then I'm sure you would think it was worth it when saw the bucks on his property. The guy I know of was chasing a 40+ inch buck that kept going between public and private ground and the hunter was determined to get the buck so he paid the price for the access. As far as I know, he didn't get the buck however.

Thanks all

I have been out there a few times and have seen some deer I was just told that some of the private propertys hold (BIGGER) Deer but I would not pay $2500 for a tresspass permit!!! Well maybe I would if I thought I would get a 40" Buck LOL

Thanks Again all

You are right, the private property does generally hold the bigger deer, but there are still some dandies on the public land. I'd do what was mentioned above, hunt the public land near the private and you may be able to catch the bucks crossing over. (Be sure you have a landowner map though, because we have been in several pissing matches with angry ranch hands wanting to know why we were on their property). After pulling the maps out and showing them exactly where we were, they realized that what we knew all along, we weren't on their property...in fact, I'm sure they knew that too, just trying to run us off.

Shelbys: Those type of guys are in every state, it funny when you pull out the map and they get all round eyed and still claim that the map is wrong, but are willing to over look it this time. I like it even better if a warden or cop shows up, Out-State tag $400 Gas $500 Catching them with their hand in the cookie jar Priceless.

I hunted 45 last year and only hunted public land. We were accused of trespassing by a large landowner in the area and the same thing happend we pulled out the ownership map and showed him exactly where we were. His son was laughing and grinning the whole time because he obviously knew dad was trying to pull a quick one on us. We did watch him catch two trespassers with dead bucks though. I have heard that this land owner will charge up to 5000 for a tag. It is definilty not worth it IMO. To much public and to many good bucks to waste that kind of money. Just my opinion. Good luck and PM me if you have any Q's.
