My youngest daughter drew a Fishlake early rifle tag this year, and harvested a nice bull on Saturday evening. She didn't have a lot of time to hunt where she has 3 young kids in school, so we were not really picky, but felt fortunate to find a good bull as it has been really tough this year.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-20-10 AT 07:24AM (MST)[p]stinky...I'm not far from being there.(dead).lol.. After the hike thru the lava slides opening morning, my new knee is swollen up as big as a football and my solid "ankle" is one sore SOB. Glad my boys were there to do the packing!
Most of you guys know why I haven't been on....just had to share some pics.
BeBop... Yea it is nice to see the kids out do the old man. and I got no regrests to have the smallest rifle bull in the whole family so far. 4th place out of 4 spots isn't bad. Still got the biggest archery bull..haha. I look at it like it was 4 awesome hunts with my family, and somebody has to be in last! What is funny is neither one of my boys have got to hunt big bulls and the girls have kicked butt!
Jace had to turn his Boulder archery back this year due to unforseen events or I am sure he would have a big stinky down too.

This is why I called it "Rocking the Fishlake". Had about 800 yards of pure lava to negotiate the first morning. My grandson didn't seen to mind but it ate my lunch!

Even though Jace had to give up his tag, he made sure to make it a memorable hunt for his sister...Called this stubborn bull out of the trees so she could put the smack down on him.

Awesome bull! Love it when family hunts come together - congrats!

Rick, that's a good looking bull. And it looks like your baby is all grown up. You hunted some pretty rough country for a guy with bad knees. How are they feeling now? I'm all packed and ready to head out on my Monroe ML hunt. Do you or Jace have any "HOT" spots you could aim me at?

Rick,
Congrats to your daughter on a gorgeous bull. Sorry to hear Jace couldn't do the Boulder hunt this year. You are the man for getting all the kids doing the hunting bit.....my hero! Glad to hear you were able to get out and about....get that leg in shape for the cull hunt you-know-where now!
Cheers bro!

Congrats Rick on her bull. That is a great bull for down there. I hope the rest of the hunts go well for you this year. :)

Great bull Jakell! Way to outdo the boys! Lol. Rick henries are coming up quick so don't do any more lava runs!!! Lol

Don't worry...If I EVER see another lava slide, it will be way too soon. Felt like I was trying to walk on stilts..nothing to stabilze with on a fused ankle and then a weak knee from the surgery, made me feel like I was a spaz going thru that crap..But the fat boy never fell down once! lol..

alchemyinvest PM sent..

thanks guys...nice to hear from all of you again.
Just got home from taking my other daughter down and filling her Dutton antelope tag. Missed a chance at a big speed goat, but ended up taking a nice 13 1/2 inch goat. Lots of fun and satisfaction in seeing your kids succeed!
And fun to tease them when it takes them 8 shots to kill! But then dad kept rangiing it at 210, and I kept telling her to hold lower! After it was all said and done, and we found him way out from where we thought he was, I ranged back to where she shot from and it was 385 yards? so maybe I shouldn't tease her too bad. I kind of mis-lead her a little. I must have been getting a range from the big sage he was behind?
Whoops!
thanks again guys!
Rick

Awesome Rick! Tell her congrats from our clan. As I told you before, there is nothing like spending a hunt like that with your family. Those memories last many lifetimes and the pictures will be enjoyed by generations!

It's always an adventure!!!

You got'er done again boss. Congrats to you and the crew! Very nice looking bull. It's amazing that Johnson's Res will hold water, I guess if you flush enough clay into it even lava rock will hold water.

Good luck on the Henrys. You guys are having a great run, (moose, elk, deer, Barbie) maybe I need to get some leg work done to get things going at our place.

Good job Rick Family. That is way cool. Not enough of the good guys around anymore.

Thanks Everyone for your comments! We did have such a great enjoyable hunt!

I have two of the best guides anyone could ask for! My dad and Jace know what they are doing for sure...thanks guys! I could have never got such a great bull without you!

I was thrilled to finally draw after three years of thinking.."This is it, this is the year!"

Well the memories made were well worth the wait! It was quite the day we will always remember. We started off the morning finding out there were already hunters where we wanted to go a little bummed we headed to a new area..little did we know what we were in for! Rocky lava as far as you could see! I am amazed my little man (7 yrs old) and my dad went the entire way, I know I would have turned around if I was in pain! But if you know my dad, he will go the extra mile to support his kids and be there!
I was so glad to have him along! We listened to the bulls up the hill but were unable to get to them in time (due to the rocky mess) and waited around for a bit. After a few hours we headed back to camp and decided we would hit the other side a little later where we were hoping to go that morning. No one was there.. relief!

Walking the trail and just as Jace was about to call here comes a group of 5 hunters rushing right past us, little upsetting to say the least that they didn't even care they were nosily stomping past! My little bro was out in the boat so we called them over and decided to take a quicker trip to another point across the lake.

Almost to the point and we spot a cow elk, then a 6 point the boat stalls and dies.. perfect timing right! The elk run back into the trees (meanwhile more hunters are filling up every open area available behind us at the edge of the lake..crazy!) We finally get going again & get to shore...as close as we can! Its either walk in the water and have wet feet all day or wade barefoot to shore.. hhmmmm decided not to have cold wet feet all night! about 5 steps from the boat, no biggie another step and we all sink to our knees in muck! ya..it was great LOL

And there was a fisherman downwind smoking a cigar.. what else can happen! Lots of hunters on one side, fisherman on the other! After we finally get some of the thick mud off us Jace calls but they weren't about to come back out with all the commotion around us!

We headed back to where we were that morning..just around the point & we were on the other side of the creek (no lava rocks! yay) then found a place to cross while sinking in the mud again, but not as bad! We got settled and waited for the shadows to hit the trees as Jace called the bull into me. He was stubborn. He came to the tree line but stayed out of site, we inched our way south hoping he was going to show himself in the next meadow. Trying to get ahead of him we crossed another stream and hiked a rocky hill and set up on the edge..before too long.. sure enough 4 cows make there way into the opening..and finally so does he!

And of course, you know the result :)

As I said before I have the best guides ever! Jace even got everything ready to go that night and hung in the trees so
we could pack it out the next morning when we had a little more help. I offered to do whatever he wanted help with, but he dug right in and got it done & would only let me hold the lights! Best brother ever! Agree?!?

Hurting and barely able to walk without pain. Dad refused to let us all go pack it out ourselves.. he kept telling us that if he was going to get his kids into it, he is going to be there for it all! He walked that long walk, and helped prep it for the hike out. Thanks Dad! I appreciate all you do for me!

I am thrilled with the bull, not to bad from what I hear is coming off the Fishlake Rife hunt so far :) and what time I had to hunt. Back to kids and life!

Thanks for the fun & memories and all your help Dad, Jace, Brandon, Chet, Trevor G. and my little man!

Well, my daughter has given a little insight into her hunt, and done it very well. I just want to add how fulfilling it is for a dad to watch his kids that he has taught to love the outdoors and how to handle a gun safely and respect the wildlife that we enjoy. And then to have them work together to quarter and pack out her bull was pretty cool too. They all told me to stay in the truck and they would get it packed out, but I told them, "I was the one who got you kids involved in hunting, and there is no way I am going to turn and run when it all turns to work"!
Yea I paid for it with a little pain but I wouldn't have missed it for the world. It was 1 mile over and 2 miles back (lol, j/k) but well worth it all. These are memories that you will never forget and they will hold close to their hearts for years. Now everytime her family drives by that area, she can tell them the story of her elk hunt...Let me tell you, when we go for a ride around Fishlake, we have lots of big bull elk stories in that area! haha...
Thanks everyone....

Congratulations on a great hunt and beautiful elk. More importantly, congratulations on having such a wonderful family. It sounds like you have it all!:)
