Calling Elk

So I've watched all of the videos and listened to all of the cds on how to make each and every elk sound, but I can't find a video, or cd that tells when to use what sound. I've been in the woods not knowing if the elk are rutting yet and the area I hunt has alot of animals but also has alot of hunters, so I never know what call to use. Do I cow call and if so what kind of sound? Do I bugle and if so what kind of bugle? If a cow call doesn't work then should I try to bugle? Do I use a combo? How many sounds and different calls should I use before the animals are spooked and I'm wasting my breath? If anyone knows of a good video, or cd that kinda explains all of this please let me know, or if you can tell me that would be great too!!

If your in the woods in Sept. the elk are rutting. As far as knowing when/ when not to call...in my opinion it depends on the elk. Some elk will come charging in....while others will turn and haul butt. It takes time in the woods and alot of screw ups to try to figure elk out. I doubt anyone can tell you things that will work in every situation. Good luck

Just get all Elknut's cds and you will greatly shorten the learning curve. Wish I'd have had them in the early years.

+1 on Elknut's stuff, the CDs, DVDs, and the playbook will all be a big help and you will learn sounds others don't even acknowledge in their material. Good luck!

I picked up a couple CDs by Jim Horn before my hunt last fall. Most of the content is about how and when to use calls, not about how to make the sounds. It worked for me as we called in a lot of bulls on my hunt using his tips, Including the bull I shot ;)
