I'm thinking of giveing the Colorado muzzeloader hunt for elk in unit 62 a shot. Just wondering if any one had hunted it and what I could expect. I have never taken a bull before and would be very happy with a 5 or small six point. I usually go for the whole hunt and love to put lots of hours in trying to find what ever I'm hunting. Do you feel there is a pretty good shot at a decent bull? Any one willing to share some pictures would be great. PM me if you like. Thanks for anyone willing to share.

From what I have heard from one of my freinds who guieds colorado is that 62 is not the best unit to hunt. They give out lots of tags, and there are tons of hunters every where. I was told that the you will not hear many elk after opening day because there is so much pressure that they stop bugling. Unit 62 gets hyped up because its right next to 61, but i was told that 62 was nothing like 61. My friend did say that every year some one usualy shoot a 350 there though. I asked him the same question your asking, and he said that I should look into some other units.

How many points do you have?

I have three points, so I should be able to get the tag if I put in for it. But I am not sure I want to burn the points and have the hills covered in orange. Sound like it is a limited tag this year on the muzzeloader. Not sure how many tags ???
I will have to look into it .

Muzzle loader unit 62-53 tags were given out to non-residents last year, 150 resident, if you are a non resident, you would have had 2 points last year and in your group with 2 points 16.9% of people drew, as long as alot of people dont drop down you should get a tag almost forsure.

I archery hunted unit 62 with an over the counter tag in '09 after hearing all the stories about the Umcompahgre Plateau and a cousin of mine rifle hunted it this past season.

You would have to pay me to Elk hunt there again, and there is no way I would burn any points on a unit 62 tag. The best part about it is getting to hear the bulls in 61 go crazy. The worst part about it is the hunting pressure and the limited amount of areas where you can actually get away from the crowds. There are a couple areas where you can count on finding a few elk after the pressure puts them there, but even with knowing where these areas are I wouldn't burn points to get the tag.

The only reason I would go back to the Plateau would be for the Mule deer. We stumbled upon and got very close to a hand full of respectable bucks while looking for an opportunity on a bull.

Many good points listed, lots of people, sightseers, wood cutters and hunters! But I wouldnt say its a unit that you wouldnt want to hunt I have hunted it for the last 20 years the last 10 with a bow and have taken 8 bulls and one cow, 9 out of 10 not to shabby, the elk are there, you do have to work for them but that the best part of the hunt.I got to hunt 61 last year during the archery season and will be back in 62 this year YES it will be alot slower and harder but thats why its hunting.

It sounds like any other unit, you really need to know the unit to have a good hunt. Not to sure what I will do?
Thanks for the input.

I have hunted 62 and killed, but I would put it at the bottom of my list of units also. The main road runs right up top, with hundreds of camps. I found the best hunting to be in the P J at the bottom, where nobody was...

Wit that said, I wouldn't go back.
