Im thinking about going to school at The University Of Montana Western and was wondering if there is any good elk hunting near there as I am very interested in playing football there but if there is no good hunting then its probably not a good option for me. And if there is good hunting how are the elk faring with the wolves or is there no wolves near Dillon? Any information on hunting near Dillon..?

There was some great hunting places not too far from Dillon when I hunted there about 8 years ago. Not sure how the herds are doing with the wolves, but it can't be good.

There is pretty decent elk (and deer) hunting near Dillon. Yes, the wolves have had an effect, but there are still animals there. Like almost anywhere, the river bottom country is typically private, and the more mountainous areas are public land. There is plenty of public land within an hour or so of Dillon.

There is plenty of good elk hunting around Dillon. The wolves have had some impact on the elk, but still lots of hunting opportunities. There are at least five different mountain ranges within an hours drive of Dillon that hold good elk hunting. Good luck with all your goals.

Hey Carrot,

There is still some decent elk hunting around there even with the wolves. They kill quite a few up in Centenial Valley (East of Moninda)every fall and I am sure there are places closer than that. There is alot of great fishing close by. The Beaverhead, Big Hole, and Ruby rivers are all relatively close and there's ton's of others as well. Where are you coming from? My son's good friend just committed to play up there next year.

One of my favorite Montana towns. Probably the best spot in the west to base out of for some of the best fishing in the world in all directions.

If I was young and single and liked to hunt and fish it'd be towards the top of the list for sure!
