Arizona 7E late

I posted in the Arizona forum, but thought I would throw this out here also.

My 14 year old daughter drew a 7E General tag. I know it's not the most sought after tag, but we are pretty excited. Does anyone have any tips they would be willing to share? I am not even talking about areas as much as tactics that might be helpful during this hunt. I am an archery hunter and have never hunted elk this late in the year before. I've also never set foot in Arizona. Also, any info on what we might expect to see?? Numbers, quality etc? I just want to have a good experience with my daughter and don't really care about scores. Any advice would be really appreciated.
Thanks.

Anthony

I don't know anything about it yet but my daughter has a cow tag in Sept. so I may be able to give you some info after that. Is hers a bull tag in Nov???? Where are you from?

yes she has the bull tag in november. we are from oregon and have never been there.

In case you didn't see what the game and fish website says about it:

Elk

NOTE: ALL ELK HUNTS IN UNIT 7 ARE DESIGNATED EITHER 7W (West) OR 7E (EAST).
Overview: Elk can frequently be found in most of the habitat types in Unit 7. Elk are not typically found in open low elevation grasslands north and east of the Peaks. During most of the hunts, elk are on summer range. The highest densities of elk on summer range are usually at elevations above the pinion-juniper habitat type. However, elk are sensitive to food availability and will move to lower elevations if summer rains improve forage conditions there. Burned areas appeal to elk, but the animals usually abandon such open sites before or after the first day of the hunts.
Elk will normally stay on summer range until significant snowfall (18-24?), pushes them out onto the winter range on the western and northern portions of the unit. The bulls usually can be found earlier on the winter range than cows in response to forage switching due to cured out grass on the summer range.

Elk densities in unit 7 and particularly in 7-E have been reduced over the past 12 years due to concerns over aspen regeneration. The lowest number of permits offered in 7-E occurred in 2006, but permit numbers have been increasing due to higher calf crops and above guideline bull ratios. Conversely, the highest number of tags for 7-W occurred in 2006. The total number of bull permits was decreased in 2009 due to a lower trend in bull-to-cow ratios and the addition of the early rifle bull hunt.

Areas:
7-E: Areas to scout out include the Hochderffer Hills, White Horse Hills, Saddle Mountain and west and north of Maverick Butte. Elk can be found in areas from Maverick Butte east to O?Leary Mountain. Higher elk densities can be found along the edge of the Kachina Peaks Wilderness. As stated above, with the current lower elk densities in 7-E, scouting prior to your hunt will be crucial to being successful.

I've hunted this unit for elk three times in the last six years and put in a ton of scouting hours. My dad, brother and I had all put in together and drew this same late rifle hunt as your daughter.
The first time my brother shot a 5x5.

Second time I shot a 6x5 probably would have been a 6x6 but he was broken off. It didn't really matter though because he was barely a six. He was the size of my brothers five. Don't have a pic sorry. My brother also shot a Spike on that hunt. It was kind of funny because we try to let the spikes live another day but it was getting towards the end of the hunt so my brother shot the Spike because we were worried we would go home with out any meat. Then about a half hour later I shot my bull in a different part of the unit. Talk about work.
We have a running joke about all the monster spikes in this unit. we probably pass up on 5 or 6 spikes a hunt. I hope you don't have visions of 400 in bulls running around. This is not a trophy unit. I think you have a pretty good chance at a Spike an okay chance of shooting a rag horn and slim to none chance at a 300 or better. I hope I'm not being too much of a pessimists and damping your excitement. Just trying to give you an idea of what to expect. If I were you I wouldnt hold out for something bigger I would shoot the first bull I saw. With out any preseason scouting it will be tougher. Create a memory with your daughter by getting one down. There are some good hills to spot off of, but there are so many tags in this unit that there is usually a crowed. You will have a better chance if you can hunt all week. Be prepared for either really cold or pretty warm weather. The weather can change in a hurry. The one tip I will give is get a coconino national forest map and mark all the suggestion from the g&f web site those are all really good spots to hunt. Stick to the west side of the unit it holds your best chance of seeing elk. This is a very big unit if you try to cover it all you will run out of time. I think the east side has some bigger bulls but hunting will be much harder. The elk won't be buggling and they will be in there bachelor herds except those delicous spikes will be running with cows often times.
Our third and final Hunt there was our best. I had hunted hard for the whole week, I finally had the most time off of all three hunts, I passed on several rag horns and was holding out for a solid six. The last day came and we hadn't got an elk so I told my dad to come on out because he had gone back to work and I would take him to a spot where some rag horns had been coming out and he could shoot one since he hadn't shot an elk in that unit yet and he really wanted the meat. So we got all set up and sure enough they started coming out. He got down on a dead rest to shoot one about the size of the ones we had shot before when I spotted this one bull. I could only see the the fronts. About this time they had spotted us and started back for the tree line when the one I saw rolled out and I got a good look at him and I said there goes a big one.(I was set up with bino's with my gun laying next to me) Then boom! The last hour of light of the last day and four hours of tracking in the snow in the dark. We killed our best bull to date. Best hunt I've been on! Even if my dad shot the bull I had been searching for all week. I was so excited for him. This is the biggest bull I've seen killed in this unit during this hunt.

(He's not a monster but we are proud of him scored around 305 if I remember correctly) I heard earlier in the week some one had killed a little bigger bull than this in the same area but I never saw it. Of all the bulls hanging in camps that I've seen in three years none were bigger. I only mention this to give you an idea of what to expect. I know some bigger bulls have been killed during the archery hunt in the rut. I don't know if they all get shot during the archery hunt or what but we have never even seen a glimpses of a bigger bull during the hunt. I'm sure there are but good luck finding them. Sorry I didn't mean for this to turn into a novel just got writing and this is what came out. My dad and brother are off to unit ten late rifle hunt this year finally got their first choice. Hoping to see some bigger bulls!
One more pic to get you excited!

I’ve been reading thru the forums and I am in the same boat I drew my first ever elk tag and it was 7E late rifle bull. I’m from california (don’t shoot me) lol I have read the Arizona game website and I have put in 3 scouting trips so far, I have seen plenty of tracks, **** and most recently this past weekend some rubs from the rut... but I have yet to find one elk, I have been all over this unit hiked tons of miles glassed my ass off but it just seems these elk are super elusive.. as the season is fast approaching I’m getting a little bit more worried not finding any elk just some sign. I’ve contacted the game warden who manages this unit as to some help where to begin way back in April and have since checked the areas he told me to but I guess my question is can anyone on here help me out with any info that might help me this season? I’m not looking to shoot a big bull just trying to have a good time and not picky at this point knowing what I know now.. any info someone is willing to share for my next scouting trip would be great or even tactics on these bulls for this new comber on elk hunting!
