I got lucky and drew New Mexico Unit 23. Never hunted here before. My hunt is Archery September 19-24. Was wondering if anyone could lead me to some areas where I can begin my scouting.
Thanks for your help

Get FS,BLM and topo maps and hope the fire doesn't burn it up. Forest is closed now due to the fire. I drew it for mz and live nearby, but smoke is so thick you can hardly breath at times.Good luck on your hunt.

Everyone will tell you to do some leg work and start off by calling a biologist or two. Then go scout it. Long unit with elk spread out. Most hunters will be in the very NW corner. Good luck.

Could be a great year for you. Those elk from AZ (just across the state line), and there a bunches, will have to go somewhere. Unit 23 is a likely area that will have much higher elk densities this year.

My Son drew the youth rifle elk hunt Oct. 8-12. Looking for any help that I can get. I have been through the country but have never hunted elk there. Would like to find him a nice bull. Any help will be appreciated.

The elk in the wallow fire are not leaving, they will move out of the way in spots where the fire is intense, but in general they will not travel long distances for no reason. The fire is mostly on the floor and it is not burning everything. I've got pictures of elk eating green grass with fire burning around them.

Sorry, but it just isn't like Disney protrayed in Bambi where every critter in the forest is running for their lives to escape the inferno.

From what I've seen in the past, new elk will migrate into burns soon after the rains come becuase that's where the best feed will be. This year is predicted to have good monsoons so only time will tell for sure, but I do not expect localized populations of elk to change at all due to the wallow fire.

The biggest factor might be the fact that it's now calving season and the new calves could be at risk somewhat.

Unit 23 does hold some good bulls, but they are scattered and some of the unit is pretty darn rugged. Best of luck to you on your hunt!

Yea I kind of figured that they wont really migrate into the unit. But its always fun to talk and get excited about it. In reality I realize it is going to be a hard hunt from what I gather. I never thought I would put in for a unit that I dont know much about. In fact the friend I put in with was the one that put us both in for this. But hunting is hunting. Hopefully it turns out productive.
