Just got a txt. from Dlelk1. His daughter has not filled her tag yet. They are back out on the desert hunting now and I know he would really appreciate any suggestions or help. Sounds like it has been a tough year out there.

Thx,
HH

Looks like some nice bulls. How come the guy in the first picture is not smiling? Seems you would be happy with a bull like that.

What an incredible time with my 19 year old daughter and her first elk hunt... Very tough hunt but have always found the harder the hunt the more rewarding when its over. Mckenzy finally shot her bull late Friday night and what an experience! Thanks to our friends who spent time off work with us on the desert.

Finally, here we go. It all started while camping on memorial day weekend. We were all hanging out in the trailer and here started the emails of unsuccessful from the dwr. My 19 year old daughters came last and out of nowhere it says successful! How could it be with only 4 points, it was then the celebrations started.

Fast forward to Day 1: After much anticipation, waiting, dreaming, and not being able to focus on life, we were heading up the deep creeks looking for Mckenzys monster bull. We saw only 2 bulls at the top of rockys and they didnt look big enough to go after in that country(at least on the opener).

Day 2: We had a nice bull just at daylight coming off the alfalfa fields heading right towards us but as luck would have it a truck coming in way to late blew him out of the area. That afternoon as we were heading back to camp we saw some elk on the indian reservation so we stopped to have a look. We saw 2 incredible bulls fighting in and out of some cottonwoods with about 20 cows, the question started then, how do we get them off the reservation? That evening we called a cow and a calf to 15 yards but couldnt get those bulls to follow. We had to head home for some very important classes at Utah State and couldnt return until Wed night and it about killed Mckenzy.

Day 3:(Thursday morning), we had a perfect setup wind perfect, a bull bugling down below us and just starting to get light. We had called for about 20 mins and had the bull just to the edge of the cedars, he was so close she could almost taste him, but yep a guy on a 4 wheeler parks 25 feet behind us and starts walking and spotting, you guessed it bull gone! That evening watched the bulls on the reservation again with awe.

Day 4: Tried a new area way west and it was a total bust. For the evening hunt we told Mckenzy to choose where we were going to go. She wanted to go west behind the reservation and see if we could call a bull to the public land(no pressure on dad). We got behind the res. and watched a nice 6 point bull come out with his cows to feed, we were only 290 yards away but they were 250 into the indian land. We watched and videoed for about an hour, cow called and couldnt get him interested. I decided to bugle and see if we could piss him off and boy did we... within 5 mins he gathered his cows and headed east. We left my 14 year old son (Takoda) and a friend Mike to spot and off we went, a 20 min run to the truck, a 15 min baha ride in my buddies truck, and another 15 min run/walk/stalk and we were about 850 yards from them. The sun was setting fast, so we closed the distance to 580 yards got setup and she let him have it. We knew he was hit but not how bad so we watched him as the sun faded away and didnt know how far he had gone before he laid down and it was pitch black. We decided to leave him and not push him and go gather our spoters and head to camp. Returning to camp my wife couldnt believe no elk again, we then informed her we left one for tomorrow and hoped we could find him.

Day 5: After a sleepless night we left for the mountain hoping to find her bull. Within 20 mins we found him just 300 yards from where we saw him last and the celebration began. I would like to thank Mckenzy for her patience and passion on this hunt. I would also like to thank my son Takoda who was there every step of the way. I had a great friend Brinton who killed a pig there last year spend every second with us and for his help in finding this awesome bull. I would also like to thank the many other friends who came and went throughout the hunt, but most importantly thaks to my loving wife who got to spend her 25th anniversary on the desert supporting us, feeding us and cheering us on all the way!

Great Story Congrats to your daughter. One couldn't ask for a better looking bull. . Thanks for the pics.

Were the cows bunched up yet? Rut running later? Got 2 hunters out there for the muzzie hunt and 2 of the cow tags are ours as well.

Everything was west of the highway on Indian land pretty tough.... The big herd finally got broken up but arts and rocky there was not much in there should be ruttin hard now .... Good luck let me know

Have they finished all the tree grinding or are they still working on it. I was out there in the late spring and was amazed at how much they had ground down. Worried that they had ruined the hour glass area.

They werent working on it while we were there so im sure your ok, just hope and pray not everyone is camped on the bench above the alfalfa fields thats totally what screwed up the rifle hunt, rumor has it there is over 800 elk on the res right now and they are being held very tight.....

11 total cow tags out there for this hunt starting on Oct 8. But the spike hunt is on too then and I don't know how many spike hunters there will be.

I think we'll be able to find a couple of cows and if I stumble on a spike maybe I'll shoot it but I am going to be out to the Books the following weekend so I'm not real eager to shoot a spike.

We don't typically camp on the bench but were thinking about it this time... maybe we'll just go back to the north where we usually camp and call it good.

Thanks

Spring count came up with aproximately 600, not 800.
They are NOT "being held tight".....they are free to come and go as they please.
Put about 60 people on the public land at once against 6 on the rez side, it's a no brainer where the elk will go.

Slamdunk, nicely said, that is exactly what i meant in my comment, I was never implying anyone was holding the elk there but simply they were holding up tight in there. I am assuming you possibly guide on the res and understand there have been some nice bulls taken there this year. In talking with many hunters who have been on the desert they have all stated this has been a different year. Glad to have finally experienced the DEEP CREEKS and enjoyed every min. Its unfortunate they give so many tags there now i hope this unit doesnt decline too fast......

It makes me sick that the state wants to lower the age objective on the deeps, therefore increasing tags to get it done. The ONLY thing that will save the quality on the public land is that the rez is "managed" properly and saves a LOT of good bulls that will keep the quality on both sides.

This it to whoever cut the fence and used the chain saw to cut through the tall sagebursh on Mr. Cook's land to retrieve your elk. There was enough evidence left to find out who you are. It's just a matter of time. I hope you enjoyed ruining an old mans fence and letting all his horses out you tresspassing no good B@stards.
You will get whats coming!!!

Dirty Steve, you should make a whole new post on this issue. Put up pictures if you have them of the damaged that was done and tell the whole story. It is interesting to know someone would cut down a fence and saw down trees to get to an elk. At the very least why not ask for permission to get to it and quarter it up and carry it out. Is it the owner wouldn't give permission? Lets here the details man.

GBA

Yes, to get out west you have to drive right by his property

I don't have any pictures or I would post them. His property is marked no hunting without permission. He has had problems and posted it to have knowledge of who goes in. He doesn't own very much land where the problems have been. If you stopped and asked he would let you in if his horses aren't in there.
Well his horses were there and several asked to hunt it but he told them no because of this.
Somebody couldn't take no for an answer and shot one then cut the fence and sawed a path through all the tall sage brush to get to it. The brush is over your head in places.
They didn't even put the fence back up.
People like this ruin it for all hunters.

From Oregon hunted it last year. I saw more unethical hunting than ever. Thought Oregon was bad with slob hunters. I probably could have turned in a few people and gotten a tag out of it. I was too worried about getting my own bull. JB

Its like escaping to the wild west out there and you're jumping back 150 years. Unfortunately some people act like its the wild west. Sorry to hear about the fence.

I know a bull was killed on the rez side down by the cemetery, they were investigations going on when I got there the second week.

All these posts here are exactly the reason the DWR wants all the elk off the Deep Creeks. That place has turned into a nightmare the last 5 or 8 years. Used to be one of the coolest places on earth :(

Cheers,
Pete

The DWR doesn't want the elk off there. The warden and biologist want to manage it way down, but its one of the 'designated' units and the wildlife game board (read legislature) require a certain number of tags in those areas.

I spoke with the warden at length yesterday out there. He said, "The Wildlife board and your legislators need to hear from you, what I say means nothing to them".

So if you don't like what is happening on the Deeps call your elected officials.

45 bull tags out there this year... should have been 7 or 8.
