Okay, I know this question has the potential to open a huge can of worms but I need to ask anyway.

I was recently asked to go on my first elk hunting trip and I'm trying to decide between my 30-06 or 270. Which do you think and what grain bullet?

Please don't come back with 'a good shot and it won't matter'. I know that's true. I just want a little more information on which is optimum.

i'd take the one you feel more comfortable shoot'n,

very similar rounds,i'd shoot a STOUT 140 or bigger.

"if you want some get some...if your bad enough come take some"

I shot 6 elk with my .270 (130 gr) then I bought a .338 win mag. As near as I can tell the Elk that I have shot with the cannon were not any more dead than the .270. Shoot the one that you like and make good shots.

All else being equal, take the 30-06 with 180 Partitions or another controlled expansion bullet.
If all else isn't equal, don't think twice about carrying the .270, but once again, shoot heavy, controlled expansion bullets.

The difference IMHO between a .270 or 30-06 and a bigger gun like a .338 is not how dead the elk is, but how fast they drop.

neither 270 or 06 are speed demons with heavy slugs,
i perfer a little lighter stout slug with speed=velocity=trajectory.IMO

The one that you shoot the best.

The more elk I kill, the more I'm leaning toward heavier bullet weights.
The '06 with 165 or 180 bullets would fill the bill if you use a penetrating type projectile. Just keep the shots under 300 yds or so.
Either of the 270 or '06 would work but the 30-06 would get the nod from me.

Thanks for the replys. I would agree that all things being equal I would shoot the 06. My problem is that I have a better scope on the 270.

Is 150 grains the largest you can get for the 270?
