Opinions please!!!!

Just thinking about a new toy here.

Is a custom rifle worth it? How much is a good custom made hunting rifle??? Maybe $1750?? I dont know.

I have a 7 rem mag that shoots 140 gr Hornaday accubonds for .75" groups at 100 yds all day long. Will I improve this with a custom rifle? Not sure I need to, But I do shoot out to 450 yds at this time.

Thanks for your feedback guys.

There are darn few custom rifles you can get for that price. In terms of accuracy, you won't find one much better that the gun you've mentioned, unless your talking about splitting hairs! IMO, a custom rifle is more about comfort and fit and "peice of mind", than it is about groups. A good custom by the top makers is going to set you back 2-5k from what I have seen. That is not including a scope, and lets face it, you need to top that custom with a good scope. That's a lot of dough...

It depends on what you mean as custom, high grade wood? light wieght kevlar? ect. you said hunting rifle so I'm guessing you mean an accurate light wieght type rifle. they would start out around $2000 and go to $6000 for the top end. will you gain much? if you're getting .75" groups the accuracy won't be a big gain but you'll get a lighter rifle with a quality fit and finish no factory rifle can offer. I own a few and I love them, I can't justify the cost I'll admit it but I like them and that's what matters to me.

Very very few hunting rifles will consitently shoot sub MOA. If youv'e got one you are already ahead of the game.

If your rifle will do that. Stay with that Badboy.
If you want a good custom rifle, get you one.
What Hunt'dude said is Very, Very correct.
If you ever build you one, you'll like it.

I took an out of the box Remington 300 wm and had the trigger tuned to 2.5 lbs and a muzzle break installed. I am shooting 5/8 inch groups at 100 yds using handloads with 180 grn accubonds.
Bansner and Mcwhorter are some fine custom rifles but your looking at 3-5k. The over all fit and finish is excellent and with the right load you could probably get 1/2 inch groups. If you have the money to burn I'd say go for it otherwise there are some good Out of the box tack driver for under 1K.
Handloading has almost always given me a sub 1 inch group or less.

Thanks Guys, I appreciate it. Kinda a rookie at custom stuff

my current Rifle is a ruger M77, old-style, tang safety.

It has a blued barrel, muzz brake and trigger work= <4lbs

I would like to have a matte finish to cut the glare and will likely change the scope to a leupold VII 4-12AO.

Any ideas to weather proof barrel & Action / matte finish it. What is teflon coating for??? Am i barking up the wrong tree???

Good luck in the draws boys.

I own a .204 and .257 Roberts made by Cooper Firearms. If your looking for testimonials, I can recommend this company without reservation. They make beautiful rifles and guarantee a three shot group the size of a nickel at 100 yards. Of course its going to come down to the shooter and type of ammo you use, but thats a pretty good start. They are not cheap however. cooperfirearms.com ................rf

You could always go the semi-custom route like Weatherby or Kimber, both make nice rifles and generally shoot under 1moa

or

Buy a Remington 700 ($400) action from Brownells, send it off to a custom barrel maker who will give you your choice of caliber, finish, length, contour ($400), then slap a synthetic stock on it ($250). I did that and have a sweet, sort-of custom 300 Weatherby now for just over 1k.

rf..........Ditto on Cooper Arms of Montana!
I know a custom Rifle Maker who bought a Cooper rifle just to tear it apart to find out how Cooper could make a rifle that accurate for such a low price. They are not cheap by any means, but to duplicate that accuracy and quaility with a custom rifle would cost at least twice as much. I LOVE my Coopers!

I also shoot the 7mm mag in a m77. I have put a trigger on it and a bell and carlson stock, with a pentax lightseeker 30mm
4x-16x with a mildot reticle. I was able to get the 139 grain interbond to shoot just shy of 3300 fps. I got it shooting fairly well out to 700. I think you have a decent deer rifle. You don't need to spend $5000 for a great rifle, just more time and practice with the one you have.
