Gunnison Basin winter ?

I know the winter was tough in eastern Colorado but how about the Gunnison area? winter isn't over but it's late enough to get some kind of idea how the deer came through, anyone know?

A buddy of mine lives in Delta and they didn't get the snow that Eastern Colorado got. He said it was a great winter for deer and elk. I haven't heard any official reports but it sure did sound like a mild winter in the western half of the state.

It's always an adventure!!!

This has been the mildest winter we've had in a long time. Snow pack is 80% of normal and we haven't had the bitter cold temps Gunnison is known for. Deer and elk should fare well.

Thanks guys, it's time to think about where you might burn your points so it's nice to know things should be normal.

We had a very open winter here in eastern Oregon, hardly any deer and not many elk wintered in my hay fields. of course that's do in a large part to the fact we don't have any deer anymore.

Im planning an early archery hunt with my father-in-law who lives in Crawford, 63 first choice, 53 second choice, what are the draw odds for these hunts? Sounds like a good year to be going.

grizzly,

You never mentioned wheather you are a Res. or NR but since the new issue of Colorado Outdoors has not came out, any day now, according to last years for 63 & 53 it was "zero pp" for both R & NR for archery deer. Now this year it might change, don't know.

Grizzly, Who is your father in-law if you don't mind me asking? I live in Crawford that is why I was asking. I might be able to help you out. You shouldn't have any problem drawing 53 or 63 with 0 Points.

All I know is it'll cost yah around $6,500.00 for a voucher and hunt there this year...

Can anyone tell me when the road to Ohio City opens? My buddy, his 5 year old and myself and my 7 year old were thinking of heading over from the Springs to look for sheds.

Are the gates into BLM gated because the roads are muddy, or are they just limiting access to foot traffic? Any idea when they might be open?

We aren't hard core shed hunters - just want to get out into the hills with our boys.

Thanks,
Desert Sheep

LAST EDITED ON Mar-05-07 AT 07:58PM (MST)[p]My father in law is Don Skinner, he lives just east of Crawford. I live in the Phoenix area, so non resident. Not sure what kind of voucher is needed, I was under the impression that the out of state tag for about $300 was all that I needed, am I wrong? I dont plan on spending $6500 on a deer hunt.

All blm roads with closure gates have been closed and will not be open until May 15, even if there is alot of warm weather. The Gunnison Basin has sage grouse, which some of you might not know is currently being considered an endangered species. The local community has been very proactive for the last 10 years trying to prevent this. Closing the gates and encouraging shed hunting after May 15 is very important. The grouse will start their mating season very soon, this is a critical time of year for them, therefore any unnecessary treks into their habitat should be avoided. Please wait to shed hunt until after May 15, besides 75% of the deer are still packing head gear anyways.

I just had a quote by a well know dealer (voucher handler) $6,500.00

$300.00 is the cost of the tag, however you need to draw it. You should check the Colorado website, it will tell you what the minimum amount of points to draw a certain tag. I can tell you the 53 and 63 rifle tags (all seasons) can't be drawn with no points.

I would also check out www.huntodds.com. They have extensive information on draw odds for Colorado. As stated earlier, you shouldn't have a problem drawing an archery tag your first year and the NR fee is just under $300. If you pay $6500 for that hunt you are out of your mind. There are guided hunts that I have been on personally that kill 180 class deer every year for $3500 plus your NR tag. These hunts are in units 63 and 62. Those landowner vouchers are worth the money if you can get them under $1000. The reason they are up there so high right now is because they are going away in 2 or 3 years. I guess they want to get the money while they can.

didn't mean to turn this post into a voucher issue, but this is whats wrong with our sport today Big $$ sorry

No Manny, it's my bad. I shouldn't have started with the whole voucher thing. Bottom line, here are the numbers off of huntodds.com for the units that were mentioned above.

Unit 63 NR Archery Deer- gauranteed with 1 bonus point and a
4.8% chance with no bonus point.
Unit 53 NR Archery Deer- gauranteed with no bonus points.

These numbers are for 2006. I hope this helps. You really should look at huntodds.com. This is from their premium service. It has information like that for every unit in Colorado and the rest of the western states are coming soon according to Kirt.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-06-07 AT 07:30AM (MST)[p]What makes you think the landowner vouchers are going away in a couple years? I think the reason they are so high is because there are people that are buying them. I would be suprised if they can get $6000 for one this year but I thought they would have a hard time getting $1000 for them.

Does huntodds have any info in their Premium service that can't be found on the CDOW website? or is it strictly point requirements?

AWHOLELOTTABULL - thanks for the info. I called the BLM office in Gunnison and they said the gates were locked until May 15th, but they didn't volunteer why.

They do. It also has a section on member information that has HO members writeup about areas in all the western states. It's one of the best sites out there for hunting information, odds and data. I used it this year for Wyoming applications, Arizona, and Colorado. It's well worth it.

As for the vouchers going away, they will be called something else and revamped to the point where you will have to go through a licensed outfitter to get one. This is just my oppinion based on a little insider information.

Plus, if you wait till May 15th, the locals will have picked up most of the sheds. That's one reason the locals are concerned about the sage grouse.

75% of the deer are still packing on March 5 is a bunch of hooey...if you believe that you won't find too many sheds...

Please, someone tell me the best places to shed hunt in the Gunnison area. I won't go until the gates open. Thank you kindly.

Thats right toughshed, 75% of bucks were still packing as of march 5, and there are still a large amount of bucks packing head gear. Unfortunatley you are very uniformed, if you knew anything about the Gunnison Basin and the people that live there you would not have made those comments. The Gunnison Basin is the most vocal and active community in Colorado when it comes to its wildlife.

Believe whatever you want, but all my comments are accurate. Have a great day, I'm headed out the door to pick up all those sheds before any non-res show up. Ha, Ha!!!

Tough Shed, Of 24 bucks in my meadow On March 8th only 1 was bare! 2 one sides... FACT! Tonight March 16th 27 deer? 1 still has both, 1 has 1, The rest are bare. The best buck 175 class layed in one spot for pretty much a whole day. Saw Him when I left for work 16:00 on March 10th Bare and bedded. He had them both that morning about 10:00 Sunday Morning he was still in the same bed at 09:00 That after noon when I left, he had finally moved about 50 yards. Easy winter in Gunnison for 06-07 Road kill minimal comparable to the late 90's when we had FEW deer.
Coyotes are not hammering them on crusted snow like happens most years here in March. Things are good if the shed hunters will LEAVE THEM ALONE. As for locals, ya there are a few trucks parked at the locked gates walking in, are they (LOCALS)? nope just new comers and Western State Collage kids who still havent seen a real winter and dont remember the days of over the counter lisences with post hunt Buck Doe ratios of 7 thats right 7 bucks per 100 does. Best place to go it's all pretty good 54 has the highest buck to doe ratio these days. Dont worry about the early evil doers I never go befor May and get 50 to 60. Not counting the meadow of course!!! My cusion got a set of (Locked) 175 class bucks last year in MAY in one of the most pounded areas. Good Luck.

I live in Gunnison. We have had a great winter, barely any snow and not very cold. A great winter for the deer and elk.
