Got drawn for 3rd muley season in unit 44. This will be my first go around in this unit and would like it if any of you members could point me in the right direction! Can and will pack the mail in if need be. Have only about three days to scout the area, so if I could get a general area to start from it would be great!!!!!

How many point did you have? I did not get drawn for that unit this year, but have hunted there in the past.

I had 7pp. I dont think that it took that many or maybe it did, but I want to hunt, so I put in for it and yeah baby! Done a little homework on the best spot for those 7pp's and unit 44 just came popping up. So patxarano, if you have any good info to point out, would realy like to hear from you, Thanks!!

Turdburglar, I know those areas on the topo's that you pointed out! Have been going over my cd topo's and a 30x40 wall topo map I just got. Both areas look to be good, can't wait!! Thanks for the info, and hope to get back to your info on that kick ass hunt your going on!! Goodluck!

I will be there in about 10 days scouting. Hope to get a tag next year. This is one of a couple of places I will be checking out.

Take care,

Archer

Archeryelk, Wish that I was there in 10 days! Hate to roll into the unkown, but guess thats part of the excitement. If you could keep me in mind after your scouting trip, let me know what you think and send me a PM and I'll let you know after I bag the big guy on places and maybe a few GPS points.

Congrats on a good tag. It could even be a great tag, weather dependant. Scouting before the season will help to get familier with roads, and camp locations. Most of the deer migrate down into the unit where you will be hunting. Don't be discourage if you don't see many deer prior to your hunt. Good luck!

Huntin100, It will take a whole hell of alot of something to get me discouraged! Could you tell me if it doesn't snow, should I pack the mail and go get'em up high, or wait it out in the mid to lower sections and see if they start getting cozy with the girls?

Much of that unit has pretty good access unless the snow is REAL bad.

I would think you would be ok either way.

44 can be a pretty dismal place to be during the summer, archery/muzzy, and early rifle seasons. There are few scattered deer in the unit and as noted above scouting early will likely get you acquainted with access and the country more than anything else. Most of the deer tend to migrate into the unit with deep snow and the rut; however, there are great bucks shot each year early...it is a matter of having a lot of patience and finding them!

As noted above the late seasons are likely the best time to hunt the unit but they also are somewhat weather/snow/rut dependent. I burned 10 pts on the unit several years ago and was holding out for a mondo buck or nothing. I had a 4th season tag and it was a very difficult hunt. There was a full moon, crunchy snow, and 60 degree days. I ended up eating my tag even though I saw some mediocre bucks the last hour of the last day....but that is usually what you have to do if you want a monster!

My son drew a 3rd season tag a couple years ago and we ate his tag as well. He only had a weekend to hunt and we just couldn't seem to get things done. We were probably being a little too picky on his hunt as well! It generally is feast or famine in that unit but if you have the right conditions and are at the right place at the right time you ought to do good.

From what I've heard the Gunnison units (as well as elsewhere) have more "resident" herds within the units and are a little more dependable. There are some great bucks in 44 and hopefully you can find them!

Jims, Thanks for the info, I will leave no rock unturned!! Sounds like the weather is the big facter in this unit! But if they are there, high or low, they can be found, just takes alot of red eye glass time to find them. What I've found out in some of the better muley country is that the big guys prefer to lay low and alone and towards the courting time, where you find the ladies, you'll find the fellas. Thanks again Jims.

280 I sent you a pm. I just remembered, I will be hunting 3rd season across the street. I'll probably hunt the last 3-4 days. If I tag out early, I may be able to show you some areas, if you have not already punched your tag. Greg

Jims, I ask another member on what they thouhgt about the southern end of 44 and was wondering if you had any thoughts on it? It's hard to tell from the topo, but some of that southern stuff, that sits back aways, sure does look tempting. Most of what the fellas have said pertains to that north and western parts of 44. Like to hear your thoughts, Thanks 280rem

Hunted 44 2nd season in 05' killed a 186", sold my 3rd season voucher last year to a friend that killed a 207". I hunted 444 instead; what a mistake (but a hell of a lot cheaper). It's been a year since I've been on this forum so let me know how to private message you and I'll offer what help I can.
I will say that Jims is absolutely correct about the weather....
