Rainy Elk

Looks like we might be in for some rain in parts of the State for the LE any weapon elk opener. In all my years hunting elk in the rut, I haven't come across much rain. Anyone have any advice for hunting in the rain? Does the rain slow the rutting activity down much? I assume right after it stops is when they are most active.

We hunted in the rain last year during the limited entry muzzleloader hunt. We were all very wet but it didn't seem to slow up the elk bugling too much. Just make sure to have rain gear and some extra socks.

Good friend of mine has Wasatch Archery, we were up yesterday in the rain and the elk were going nuts, we heard hundreds, literally hundreds of bugles, back up this morning and only heard a few distant bugles. It rained hard this morning early and then just drizzled but it didn't matter, they were not talking.

Ive seen the elk even more active while it rains during the LE rifle and muzzy hunts. If you have a spot you know elk are in I would just be patient and hunt em there. of course keep your powder or scope dry first, then keep yourself dry second. It just depends on what kind of pressure they are seeing. Hunters, tourists, and cattleman can push em away from the flats and back in the timber. Good luck,if you have a tag it looks like it will be raining for a while.

Rain is great. Love hunting in it.

Lightning is another story, get real spooky when lightning is cracking all around.

Unfortunately, this time of year, many times lightning accompanies the rain.

Saturday afternoon my boy and I got chased off the mountain up Logan Canyon by a nasty lightening storm. We were sitting on a ridge watching it roll in and then the lightening started... we bee-lined it off the hill fast.

Sunday morning it was fogged in, like 50 yard visibility. But the bulls were crazy loud.

Nope, no bull on the ground for me yet, headed back out tomorrow.

The rain and fog kept me from harvesting a giant, but I was fortunate enough to get my first elk Saturday. Had the big boy at 60 yards but couldn't see him through the fog.
