Heard Jim Horn's CD on early season elk calling where he talked about "Silent Calling". Do any of you guys use this method or have your own version of it? What do you guys think about using a Heads up cow decoy while using this method? Thanks for any info?

Most of the time I start out with silent calling, usually if there is a bull around they'll join in. I've called in a few that we've shot that did come in completely silent though. Called in lots of cows and calfs that way too.

remind me what silent calling is? I mean if you are silent, can you really be calling? What do you do, gesture to them lovingly?

It refers to the elk being silent! Meaning little to no rutting action which basically equates into no cows in an area nearing estrus! When this is taking place hunters do their best by using Silent or Cold Calling Techniques/Setups to lure elk their way out of curiosity. This can be done very effectively because elk are a herd animal, when they hear other unfamiliar elk close by they have the tendency to come & check them out!

Elk know one another by sight & sound, when unfamiliar elk are heard by them this can attract other elk their way. This can be done with the use of Bugling only, Cow Calling only or a mixture of both depending on the situation.
