Hunted unit 22 3rd season the last couple years. Lots of roads, elk hunters and private ground. Although, there is a fair amount of public land or access onto F&G leased oil companies land. We like hunting deer in 22 an being from Utah, it's still much better than what we have. Most people don't get off the roads much and hike around and a few places you can get away from most the other people. We stay through all 7 days and it only gets better as the week progresses. We only bought points this year and we will be back in 2009.

I am also intrested in GMU 22. I put in for the muzzleloader hunt and should draw. Would someone out there be willing to advise me on a good central location to camp this summer when I go there to scout? I will be using my travel trailer. Any other advice would be more than welcome.
Thanks in advance, Don

no doe, i heard that scouting the area in 22 sucks mostly because its a migration unit so you might be dissapointed with your scouting unless you are just going to check out the terrain?

Thats not good news. The lady that always picks up at the Meeker F&G office told me that GMU 22 holds deer year round. Anyone else care to way in on the subject?
Thanks Don

I hunted 22 with a muzzy last year, the area is some of the best looking mule deer country I have ever seen, and I thought I would see deer everywhere, but as stated above it is a migration area. I thought their should be hundreds of deer in the unit during the summer and in September, but deer sightings that time of year were slim. Some places I scouted and hunted I saw 10-15 deer in the mournings and again in the evenings, and others I saw none. I think their is potential but don't count on it, if you see a 20 inch 4 point you better shoot it. I saw a few scouting, but none while hunting. I ended up eating my $300 tag. A friend of mine did see a 28 inch 170 class buck a week or two before the hunt, but I couldn't ever find him. I would probably hunt it again, I think any area in colorado can produce a nice buck, you just have to learn how to hunt it and find out where the deer are.

Thanks HuntinFoo, your hunt sounds like the one I had in GMU 23 last year. Beter to go than stay home.

I would suggest hunting as high as possible. Or, find an alfalfa feild bordering BLM and hunt the fence line morning and night to catch them moving between feed and bed. When we scouted in the summer and again in September (two years ago), we did not see very many deer. We have been hunting the 3rd season and it is amazing how many more deer have migrated in by the 1st of November.
