I was lucky after 10 years of applications to draw the NM 16a 1-15 archery tag. Can anyone help me with some locations to get started. Im new to the site and I promise to be a contributor in the future.

That's a Great tag, kissing cousin with 16d imo . I don't know it well but for the most part I'd say you could blindly stick a thumb tack on a unit map and find great hunting within a half mile. Congrats.

Don't kid yourself. There are some good bulls in 16A but don't believe all the guys who make it sound like there's a 350 behind every tree and don't shoot anything less. I hunted 16A several yrs ago. It was my first time in the Gilas and I felt like I needed to hold out for a 350+ bull or I would be a failure. Passed on a 300 bull at full draw at 15 yds. Saw some 350+ bulls but never got within bow range. There's also a lot of areas in 16A which were void of elk, in my experience, as opposed to 15 where it seems like there were elk everywhere. Maybe it was just because it was early(1st season) but some areas seemed to have higher concentration than others.

I live and hunt here and I would rather have a 16A tag than a 15 any given day. As serve him said its in close contention with 16d. Being realistic there are plenty of 300 _330 class bulls there finding them just requires work. I would not shoot at anything less than 340.

Get a good map and locate water tanks off the road and put up tree stand or ground blind......on early hunt if you have the patience and right tank bulls will show.......

I appreciate all of the positive feed back. High density or not I feel fortunate to have the possibility of a bull of over 320. Thanks everyone.
