They severely cut tags there last year so that ought to tell you something? There were ~340 doe and ~175 buck tags handed out for the rifle seasons in 44 in 2007 and ~171 doe and ~85 buck rifle tags in 44 in 2008. This is about a 50% cut in tags. Generally fawns and older aged class bucks are the first to die when there is severe winterkill. I have heard from several guys that hunted there that it was thin pickings this year for bucks. Keep your fingers crossed they don't have 2 bad winters in a row or it could really devastate that herd!
I hunted just north of 44 this year, and saw a one-horned forky, another buck, and about six does, that is it. I heard the herd took a huge beating last winter.
