Uintas

I am going to school in Logan and even though I have hunted southern Utah my entire life with a bow, I am trying to hunt closer to Logan so I can get more time in while going to school. I love backpacking and want to do some trips up into the Uintas this year and fish while I scout for deer.

I was just wondering where a good place to start would be?

Thanks

Dillon

Very low deer densities in the Uintas. I can think of some better spots closer to Logan. Try some of the wilderness areas in the Wasatch Range for bowhunting. Good luck.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-08-10 AT 01:12PM (MST)[p]Densities can be low, especially on the southside above Vernal area. Although, if you are willing to put the time in, you can find decent bucks at timberline. It can be a tough hunt and hard to get into. Bucks can be found at lower elevations, but the vast amount of timber make it tough. I would try the earlier seasons, archery and muzzleloader. By the time the rifle comes around the weather makes it hard to hunt and the bucks have usually started coming down.

Plan on bringing your backpacking stove if you plan to camp within a 1/4 mile of a lake. Campfires are prohibited by the Forest Service near a lake in the Wilderness area. This restriction applies to nearly all Wilderness lakes on the South Slope, but only a handful on the North Slope. So, if your planning on going to the North Slope, check with the Forest Service on which lakes you can have a fire at. Ask them to try and defend this knuckle head idea....it may prove intersting.

Ditto to Daxter,
The Uintas are fun fishing, but deer numbers are very limited. I fish out there alot and have only seen one deer worth chasing.

I moved here (Roosevelt) a few years ago and it has been a learning experience. Just like anywhere else there are some pretty good bucks but you have to look for them. I would go high and glass a lot.

respect my authorita

If you were making the drive all the way to the South Slope, you just as well head south... maybe these guys don't know where Logan is..?

The North Slope has very low buck numbers. I have hunted there at least one season every of the last 14 years, and with family I can remember the last 20+ years. In the last 10 years I can honestly say I have seen only 2 4-point bucks hunting the North Slope all the way from Spirit Lake down to Red Canyon Lodge, and around heading towards Vernal. Both were in the archery, and I got a shot at the smaller one. (He ducked-the-string and my arrow went right over his shoulder.) But that was 4 years ago now, and I haven't seen a decent buck since.

Anyway, there is so much cover it's hard finding the deer. Last muzzleloader season we were discouraged and ended up spending our time calling in a 5x5, a 6x4, and a crazy 6x2 bull elk in the rut... We didn't see but one dink 2-point buck.

If you pack in and get to some higher country, (maybe below King's Peak, up from Henry's Fork..?) I imagine there are some bucks up there, but I've never hunted it, just hiked and fished.

Some good advice above is the wilderness areas of the Wasatch. There are some deer, and some nice bucks. Good Luck to ya no matter what you decide.

Thanks guys maybe I will have to just go fishing in the Uintas and stick with my honey holes in souther Utah for archery. I saw over 20 bucks in one morning there this year and got a nice 4x4 at about 10am the first day I was out. I just want to get to know somewhere new. What scares me is that I scouted around Logan all summer last year and saw one...yes one buck all summer long. Thanks for the input.

With a bow...wasatch front all the way! As was said a few posts ago, hit the wilderness areas at 9500 feet and up.

I think you would be better off hunting logan canyon than the Uintas. Probably about as many deer!

Sit tall in the saddle, hold your head up high, keep your eyes fixed to where the trail meets the sky...

I'm tellin ya, you should hunt the top of the Wellsvilles. I've seen monsters up there every year. My friends brother kills a big buck every year with his bow up there. Stay away from Logan Canyon, and Blacksmith fork. Too many people, and bad buck to doe ratio.

I have worked at the national forest boundary of the North Slope for the last 6 years. I have hunted up there a lot. There are other areas with higher concentrations of deer, but each year I have seen a number of good 29" plus bucks come out of there. It is a tougher hunt due to access and how heavily wooded it is. I think the density of the timber actually makes people think there are less numbers of deer in there than what are actually in there. Additionally it is one of the worst places to rifle hunt due to an early migration of the deer. By the time the rifle hunt rolls around most of the deer have busted azz to lower eleveation. One good basin I have seen good numbers of deer in is Allsop. It wouldn't hurt to take a couple pack trips in this summer have fun, fish and see if you can locate a couple bucks. Nice thing too is if you are camping in one of the basins you can wake early and get to a saddle that would enable you to glass a couple different basins.

Man! You have no idea what great country you are living in right now. I hunt close to Logan for the general bow hunt every year. There are some great spots over there. The Wellsville mtns are awesome, Logan canyon is a good spot, and my favorite is Blacksmith Fork Canyon. I been in some spots up there where I have had seen 10-15 bucks in bachelor groups. I have yet to kill a buck with my bow, but when I do it will be up there or on the front.
Good luck! Screw the uintas, you will see more people than deer.

HBJ, ha ha quit giving away our honeyholes! You know there are at least 12 200 plus inchers on the Wellsvilles lol

if you are set on hunting the UINTAHS scout around WHITNEY RESERVOIR.....some great bucks have been taken there....plus you have the TWO BEAR cwmu that has some great bucks on it...hunt the edges and you WILL see enough good bucks to keep your attention....good luck
