G OR H IN WYOMING?

I know this topic has been talked about alot but, what do you guys think? G or H? Or would you do something else. It seems that everybody is not so inthuised about the high country anymore. Just would like to hear everybodies opinions and or thoughts. Thanks.

I live in G and have hunted G & H for 24 years. I quit deer hunting G & H two years ago for other parts of the state and will go to other western states if I can draw the permits. Many hard core deer hunters living here are not hunting deer any longer in G or H so you guys paying the big bucks for the NR tags can take that for what it's worth.

Thanks for the comments. I have friends that have hunted in H the last four yrs & they say it has progressivley gotten worse, they have killed acouple of nice bucks, nothing to big. They hunt the openner and the last week & these guys get off of the beaten bath as much as they can and they still say its an absolute joke. Hunters on horses everywhere you turn. Any ways dont know if it would be worth to time and effort.

I think it has gone downhill. I'm sure I'll be back as I enjoy the hunting up there. Packing in on horses, very few bowhunters, and still a few good deer around.
I haven't seen a real huge buck up there the last 2 years, but it's still better than general season Utah!!

I like the hunt because it's fun, not because I feel like I have a great chance at a super buck. We didn't see many people last year. Rained a lot. I think that kept a lot of guys in their camps and home.

Growing up there and knowing how good the deer hunting used to be and what it is now is depressing. However there will always been big deer there just not as many as there used to be.

I agree whole heartedly with the above comments. I hunted that country every year from 83 to 98 and said I would not go back until Wyoming Game and Fish makes positive changes in their management. I don't think I'll live long enough to see that happen. Too bad Game and Fish can't (won't) manage what could be a crown jewel of mule deer hunting. It's a tragedy.

I know when I hunted H, it was a joke. . . I wrote fish and wildlife a letter. I saw way too many bad actors and way too many people. I wont go back. . .

I think the strategy is to just by points for a few years to see if the regions can make some sort of comeback. I hunted G last year and it was depressing to see the decline in number and quality of bucks compared to just a few years ago. Hopefully, Wyoming will get its act together and come up with a better management plan.

I am going to be honest here. We hunted H 2 years ago and saw bucks that would make your draw drop during the preseason. We thought we were going to have the hunt of our lives but when we went back, there were only 2 bucks left out of 23 and they were two points.

Even the outfitters were trying to figure out what happened. We hunted long and hard and even went back another time later in the season after a good snow. There were never anymore tracks in the snow. We pushed the basins and had nothing come out. I wondered where they went. What happened to the deer? Are there wolves in there to push them out? Is that normal for all the bucks to just up and disappear? All the old timers we ran into said we should be seeing good bucks and would point to the basins where we had seen them. But then we never did see any? What do you think?

I think their dead. Nothing for them to eat on the winter ranges. I don't believe its possible to have more deer without some winter feed. Just my thoughts.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-22-07 AT 12:48PM (MST)[p]They could not have died. I failed to mention we went back to hunt just 2 weeks later. They must have moved out or been chased out by the wolves. Any guesses.

You know that nasty thick blowdown timber you had to bushwhack through to get to the basins where those deer were living in the summer? Thats where they go once the hunting pressure starts. And they don't come out of there until the hunters are gone.

I know everyone says G and H are going downhill, but when people say going down hill, does they really mean that there are fewer book deer being taken, or actually fewer bucks. From what I've heard, there are fewer book deer being taken but the mid range 160's and solid 170's are fine.

I kind of agree on the points system, I know wyomings goal is not to grow trophy deer but come on, In the few years I have lived in wyoming I think the deer are getting smaller, Maybe we need to have some more incentive to kill a few does and drive up the ratio's.
Just my opinion.
