Hunt Coyotes

It seems that the entire RAC and Board Meeting processes has been very "predator" related. I would just like to encourage everyone to put in a little time once in a while to shooting or trapping coyotes. With the new ruling to adopt Option 2 I feel that if we want to recover those lost tags which equal opportunity we need to do our part. I personally was for option 2, and now I needed to do my part to see that it is successful. We need 25 bucks per 100 does to get more tags, so today is the time to start working toward that goal. I brought a .234 from home and a box of bullets. I have a goal to get 4 coyotes before May. I would encourage all of you to set predator extermination goals, and have a blast checking them off.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-02-10 AT 10:13PM (MST)[p]I try my hardest to do my part went out all day yesterday and didnt call a single one in. Either I suck at calling or the area I went to gets a lot of pressure. Probably my calling but damn it i try. They should make spot lighting legal as long as you call it in and give all your info. Like liscens#, plates, vehicle, were you will be at. I would get a lot more coyotes at night if it was legal as would everyone else, and at night your chances go way up of killing dogs. Hell you can do it in certian countys in nevada why not in utah?

I gave a older electronic caller to friends in utah so they could call coyotes in the area I hunt. Doing what ever I can to lower the number of dogs so I have more deer to hunt.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

I try hard. Had traps out for about a month now. Because I don't have too much money I trap fairly close to town, but perfectly legally. I caught a dog yesterday and the owner threatened me pretty bad. The dog was not hurt. I really wish those kind of idiot environmentalists would realize that we have rights too.

When we had coyotes I always called at night, legal in Nebraska. It is so much easier than in the day if you have a guy with you who knows what he is doing. We usually used the red lense. We went 5 for 5 one time on a set, they were getting nervous but I think I could have got one or two more if I wouldn't have had to reload. Sitting in hay bales higher than them is the only way for me at night otherwise it is a little nerve racking.

Smalltown, Just wait till you catch a domestic dog and the owner gets pissed goes to pull your 2nd trap yep a double set and you catch her to by 3 fingers and she has to call her husband to turn her loose , he pulled one trap a 12 inch earth anchor i came in 10 minutes after and caught them in the act of trying to pull a 18 inch anchor and informed them that i was legal as hell but they had infact commited a crime by pulling a trap and the husband knew i had them by the balls and opted to leave without further ado. just fyi to keep in mind !

i spend more time and money hunting coyotes then big game lol
i'm lookin for 4 for the weekend.
i don't get out as much as i use to but average 30 a winter with my best year getting 158 coyotes
i'm a coyote call a holic and have over 100 production calls ans 60 custom made calls i have 4 electronic cllers
i have around 70 deer elk and antelope calls
some folks collect stamps i collect calls mine are a lot more fun to play with lol

I am from a ranch in Wyoming. We run about 3000 sheep and 500 cows. The county we live in has a trapper. He is out all the time and is paid to do it. He has traps, snares, and n44s out. He also hunts from an air plane that really works well. These tools hunt all the time, calling only works for 20 o r30 mins you sit there. Why does the state not hire people like this. They could add a small fee to game tags to pay for them. There are people out there thats good at controlling preditors. Or have the swf hire these people to keep hunting good in Utah.

I took out three yotes this past weekend here in southern New Mexico. I hunt about 5 miles from the border with Mexico and those dogs come flying in to mouth calls. Can't wait til saturday, be at it again.

Love the possitive attitude man! Everyone has something to nag about regarding the changes to Utah deer hunting. Personally I don't like some of it, don't mind other parts, but like you basically said, we will get what we get and if that means we need to get 25/100 buck/doe ratio for more tags, why not have fun trying to help?

Good post. Kill them coyotes!

i hunt coyotes much as posible. they need to bring back spot lighting that would help with the problem

Some research findings on coyote populations report if you don't kill 60 percent of the population in a given area, they will have bigger litters if they have good food supplies and rebound fast. Kill alot in given areas.

I wish our deer herds would rebound just as fast.

I think we should make efforts to attend county meetings in Utah and try to get it to where you can spotlight for coyotes. Where spotlighting is a county ordinance that is where the decisions have to be made. I know some counties offer bounties also, and I wish they were better known or advertised. I love what the boys in Beaver Utah do with there competitions.

They are easy to call in the winter and fun to do but if more people would learn to den. It would help out the deer alot. When you get a den you kill all the pups and most of the time 3 or 4 old ones and this is when the coyotes are really killing the fawns.

longshooter, that i a pretty good story. In mine the guy stole my trap tried to get the game warden to get me for something and the game warden told him I was 100% legal. Only problem is the guy is a real loser and I'm sure I'll have trouble with him again.

The family of coyotes. A den is the hole that they live in. Most of time there are a few yearlings that live with the pair that has pups. On the ranch this is when the coyote kill lots of lambs and fawns. They can be carried back to the den. With a set of coyote dogs its really fun to do. The coyote will fight with the dogs than come back to you and you get to shoot them really close most of the time.

what a pipe dream thinking you and your yote calls are going to even make a dent in the coyote population.

Screw SFW and their BS worthless projects and once in a life time 100% success shoots! This state deserves better!!!

I talked with a good friend of mine today that is a game biologist in Kansas. He said they have done a recent study (he's going to email me a link) that showed some interesting things. When they did intensive predation control, specifically on coyotes, they made the remaining ones stronger. Their study showed that having a decrease in coyote population made the alpha males and females stronger/healthier and those stronger females litters usually double in size and in some cases tripled. Their bottom line was, predation control is only good if you kill the vast majority of the critters and maintain that pressure. Their studies showed that if you knock them down and don't keep the pressure on them, they will be more prolific than ever. That's why poisoning them worked so well. It not only targeted the weak, it also targeted the strong and the puppies. He also confirmed what the DWR said at the WB meeting, and that is we need to hunt them in the spring and early summer. That is the most effective time to kill them. As soon as he emails me the link to the study I will post it up. He also said, Colorado did a similar study with similar results back in the mid to late 90's.

It's always an adventure!!!

They dont put a dent in it. Most I have ever killed in a year is 78. Thats why there needs to be county trappers. The trapper here kills 2500 to 3000 coyotes a year thats a dent. He is a pro and around casper there are lots of sheep ranches so the coyote have to get killed or it will brake a ranch. There are not many people that can hunt and kill like he can though. If swf or the game and fish hired these kinda people it would help but have to be held acountable. It took use a long time to find a trapper this good.
