I like to consider myself a trophy hunter. The problem is that I am just not very good at it. Back in the the year 2000 I made a goal of not shooting a deer unless I felt it hit the 180 inch mark. I had killed some nice deer before that so I figured it was time to make some rules to make hunting a more engaging and challenging sport for myself. Well from 2000-2008 I ended each season without even getting an opportunity at that 180 deer. I had gone 7 years without even thinking of pulling the trigger on any animal.

In 2008, all I had on my mind was to remember that feeling of what it felt like to actually kill something again. So I told myself for this year only I was going to take something with my bow regardless of size and to taste what deer meat actually tasted like again. If it had spikes it was in trouble. I was excited but also disappointed in the fact that I had not achieved my goal of so long ago.

I had myself a general northern tag and managed to get myself onto some private property for the archery hunt. I only had 3 days to hunt this year so I was going in gunning so to speak. My first morning in I spotted a group of 5 bucks, with 2 of them looking okay. I reminded myself of my new goal and decided that the first buck I got into range of regardless of size I was going to try and shoot. The bucks were all feeding but the ground was moist and quiet. The wind was non-existent. I felt I might be able with the conditions and the cover to get close. To make a long story short I snuck within 52 yards of this buck and the shot was true and the buck only made it about 30 yards as I watched it fall. The rush was just as I remembered it. It was good to remember that feeling and taking the animal with the bow reinforced my doubts that maybe I couldn't get close to animals anymore.

The reason I chose this buck for this weeks contest is twofold. One, this buck totally through me for a loop on score. Reason two, if your like me it felt good to achieve that feeling again. I also had a great friend who helped the whole way. I wanted to share that feeling and experience. I believe in trophy hunting and went back to my goal of trying to shoot a 180 the last couple years. I shot a buck in colorado last year that went 179. Talk about heartache. Until the goal is reached I may have to satisfy that hunger 8 years down the road and grab the bow and give it a whirl.

This Weeks Rules.

1. Contest will end Saturday evening of March 5th
2. Only One gross score guess per member please
3. Scores can be used more than once

This Weeks hint. Last weeks buck that scored 173 is the buck to the left in the last picture.

Good Luck

Your first picture he looks bigger in and some of the mounted pictures he looks smaller. So I am going with the first picture with the hunter . Gives more to go on,only looking at a picture.
172 2/8 gross

That tall buck is so deceiving-

I'd say your velvet buck is 166 6/8"
