As I was coming home from photographing this buck, I stopped into a gas station about 100 miles outside of town. There were three elk hunters sitting, getting some lunch. I started talking with them about how their hunt was going. Not so hot.
They asked me if I was hunting as well, and I replied, "No I've been photographing that big buck in around town."
They said, "Yeah, that big one got killed!"
I said, "No, I just photographed him..."
I suppose to confirm, they asked some old timer who I assumed owned the place, "Hey, didn't that big town buck get killed"?
The old timer said, "Yep, someone shot him with a arrow and they had to put him down."
Thinking they may have mistaken Buck Norris for another, I showed him a photo.
"Yep, that's him."
Chills went down my spine. I realized I had been photographing a ghost buck. I should have picked up on the signs: his antlers appeared whiter than normal, he approached me often seeming unafraid and unthreatened, and sometimes, if the sun hit my lens just right he appeared transparent. It all makes sense now. I got some really good video of him and then found there was nothing to download from the SD card...I'm sure I hit the record button. Strange...
Photographing a monster like this is cool as hell, but photographing a monster mule deer ghost, Wow, PRICELESS!
P.S. I'm pretty sure he only appears to me, so don't go trying to find him.
