What do you think of this one? Taker in your book? He was a real good one for sure. A 3x4 though.

I would say it depends on what the size of animal are in the area. In 2007 I passed a 38 inch 3x4 in the Region G on opening morning. I have regretted it from the point he buck went out of sight till now. This is my sad story. We pack 6 miles back in and found ourselves racing a guide around the ridge for the first hour after light. We were higher on the ridge then the guide and his crew. This allowed us to stay just ahead of them. We herd them shoot about an hour after light and that's when it all happened 10 to 15 bucks passed below use at 75 yards. A few small ones passed us and then all I could see was horn. I mean the kind that is thick at the bases like pop can and just kept going out and up. I analyzed what he had when I notice hes was just a 3 on one side. My dads buddy had the trigger half pulled before i informed him it was only 3 on one side. Well I had just decided he was big enough even with 3 on one side. Then boom my dads fried shot a different one. Well I didn't want 2 bucks down on opening day 8 miles from the truck and 2 from base camp. I watch the buck walk out of the basin for 10 minutes. When we got to my dads friends buck it turned out to be a 33 inch 3x4. The buck I let walk was 6 inches wider 6 inches taller. We estimates him to be 38 inches wide compared to the one on the ground. The decision to not shoot at a slam dunk distance has haunted me ever since. if he had 4 on both side he would have easily been 200 + inch typical.

I'd probably fill my tag and be darn happy with that guy. Even with no G-3 on the one side and lack of good G-1's, looks like he might gross close to 180 on that awesome frame.

His rack looks fairly normal but his body looks rangey and skinny. Probably an old buck on his way down. Dont let those going away head down looks fool you. He's probably a 28 inch 170 buck that wont be much for table fare. All that and no eyeguards I pass.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-02-15 AT 08:18PM (MST)[p]This looks a lot like the buck I shot in WY last year. I was hunting my second choice tag, so I wasn't super picky. It was on about day 5. Mine was a 28" 3x4, with no eyeguard on the 3 side. He was one of those ifs and buts bucks. If he had this, if he had that, but he didn't. As he was he was pushing 170. Double the good side, and he may have been pushing 180. Still, a solid buck, as is this one.

If he were a 4X4, he would be the type of typical frame that most people underestimate. I think where people go wrong is in underestimating how tall bucks like this are. There is a lot of length going up, and length going up scores the same as length going out. Those are pretty impressive fronts, but great scoring deer have G3s that split off of the G2 closer to the main beam- and of course G4s.

In the end, he has that big mature buck look, and I would be happy to have this fellor hanging on my wall.

I think he's a 170" buck as a 3x4. I don't think he is 30" wide. In my book, I'm killing him opening morning. But as this is Founder we're talking about, I'm just grateful that he posted a pic of him for me to see.

Having said that, if this is Utah, general season, you might want to keep an eye on him. If you don't, someone else definitely will.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-06-15 AT 03:00PM (MST)[p]He has to be over 180, doesn't he? If he matched up I would put him over 190 because of those fronts. I say 182.

+1, we could easily be wrong because it's so hard to score a Buck from a few pics but i agree exactly with your line of thinking. I just think his frame is bigger, higher and wider, than some are giving credit for.

Hunting opportunities are just too limited to be passing on bucks of this class, missing a point or not. :)

There seems to be a strong gene for that up there. Every year I see a couple just like him. Sometimes they're missing the G2 sometimes the G3, but great bucks otherwise. They'd have to be really, really something before I would take one.

Pretty much others have said: depends on when & where

opening day 12aWest in Arizona rifle pass
opening day 12aWest in Arizona muzzleloader pass
opening day 12aWest in Arizona archery pass

opening day unit 3 in Colorado rifle BOOM
opening day unit 3 in Colorado muzzle loader BOOM
opening day unit 3 in Colorado archery THWACK

Last day any where, any season, near the road/trail, he's in big trouble.

Nice buck anyone should be happy to put him in a place of honor.

Happy new year and may 2015 be full of health, prosperity and limited entry tags!
