LAST EDITED ON Aug-29-16 AT 04:52PM (MST)[p]So I have been following all the post here for years. Finally found a deer worth sharing and asking for help with. I am a archery hunter that has never been able to connect with a buck deer. This buck is in open sagebrush and has at least 5 friends with him most of the time. How do I get close enough for a shot? I am trying to upload the pictures so please help. Thanks for any help.

IF they always bed in that thick crap you will have to ambush them at some point. That stuff is ridiculous and impossible to put a sneak on a buck. Try to figure out where they water or bed and find an ambush point. Or where they wander out to feed and set up on them. Good luck!

play the wind and maybe have someone guide you into them when they bed. thats a difficult stalk that will be SO rewarding if you can execute it. keep on him and be smart. just be patient and positive. if it doesnt look good, back out and try again later.

I have to Second what Coyote Chaser said. If those photos are a good indication of the vegetation they live in, your best bet will be to ambush them.

When hunting deer you have to get close to, there are only three things to worry about: Can they see you, can they hear you, and can they smell you? If you are sneaking in on 5 bucks, the chances that one of them is going to hear you is higher and the chances that one of them will see you is higher, even if you come in from down wind.

If you can find an ambush point, and position yourself down wind from that point, you already have that advantage going for you. Then, if you are sitting still, you aren't making noise, so that's advantage number 2. And finally, by holding still in concealment, you reduce the likelihood of being seen drastically, even by 5 bucks.

Try and pattern where they move to in the morning, or in the evening. Then get set up 30-50 yards downwind of their usually trail and wait. Patiently. Trust the method. If they don't happen by the first time, go back the next day and do it again...

Good Luck..!! He's a dandy.!!

I agree. That tall mahogany is tough to stalk a buck in. And tough to shoot through. And if he has other bucks to act as "radar" it will be really tough. Two things; be patient and only go after him if you have a legitimate chance. If you blow him out of the country, it's only going to get harder to kill him. And not sure, but if you are in Wyoming, you could just wait and sit on him for the rifle opener. In this case, patience will be a virtue. Best of luck.

Some good advice already shared.

Definitely agree to be careful not to bugger him too much. Make those stalk attempts when you really have a good chance at a shot, when the wind is good and you have plenty of time to take it very slow.

Sounds fun!
