I drew elk area 231. What type of bull should I hold out for, I will probably have the whole season if needed, any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

I few years ago I was hunting the northern most area for cow elk (archery). A friend of mine had an archery tag for deer and I while hunting cow elk I was scouting for deer. I saw allot of bulls and deer, but very few cows. Of the bulls 3 of them came to mind. They were all better than 350 BC and I watched one in a new burn area for several hours, amazed of how large his hrons were. Unit 231 has allot of 6x6's killed during the hunt, so be patient. I would diffently do some summer scouting and call the area biologist to see where the bulls will be in your season. If I had the entire hunt to hunt then I would try and shoot a bull over 300 BC preferrable 350 or above. Have fun, one of these days I'll too draw that tag. I have 9 bonus points and can't draw that tag.(rifle) Good luck Mickeyelk

"BEST" unit in the state,so YOU got MY tag,What hunt did YOU draw, and how many B.P. did YOU have??? Good Luck ---

I got deer unit 16 and rifle elk unit 23 (231)
I had 6 bonus points for elk, first time ever drawing.
I have only taken 1 small 6 point bull in Wyoming a few years back, and have really been into the bucks and not the elk but did not want to waist the points, and as luck has it I drew out . I will hold out for a 350 plus bull if possible, I can take the whole season if needed, will have to make several scouting trips, only 3 hrs from my house.
Thanks,
Dave

I drew 231 archery last year and my wife drew 231 muzzleloader this year...neither of us can draw a deer tag. I had the best hunt of my life last year in 231...was into big bulls everyday...no I didn't kill one...not because the elk didn't give me opportunities...if you want the gory details would be happy to tell you how having a bow in your lap instead of vertical can cost you a 7x7.

Anyway, I know some places you could start your scouting. A 4 wheeler would be a big help in scouting and hunting this area. Would be happy to share information with you...also live in Las Vegas. Send me an email at [email protected] and I'll send you my phone number and we can talk.
