Looks like Mitt will never be out of a job. The voters in Utah must think he can summon up seagulls at will. Obviously he could be Governor of Utah if he wanted.

Didn't someone say religion wasn't an issue in the election?

LAST EDITED ON Feb-06-08 AT 08:40AM (MST)[p]The people of Utah are not scared to vote for a conservative and we for sure aren't afraid to vote for a mormon. Mitt is a regular everyday mormon, he's not the prophet. He lost the nominee because of his faith.

There are no true conservatives running anymore. Reagan is rolling ovewr in his grave.

How right you are 202. Funny how many tout Romney as a true conservative when back in 94 he stated he wasn't willing to be in the same party as Reagan! Problem is the power brokers in the party have a good memory about such things. He's a decent guy but he will fall short in the process it's just not his time. IMO

Why are you so concerned about peoples religion Nick?

Utah voted for Romney? will wonders never cease.

Romney may have lost because of his religion but it wasn't because he's a Morman, Huckleberry lost because of his religion as well. it's not the religion , it's the amount of it. moderates are turned off by anyone too extreme, and moderates are the ones nominating McCain.

I think Utah was sending a rather clear message given overwhelming distribution of votes to Romney. Religion still plays a very strong role in today's politics.

202, have you ever picked up a book and read about Teddy Roosevelt or Ronald Reagan? By your standards Reagan would be considered a bleeding heart liberal, so please spare us the diety rhetoric.

A review of Reagan's presidency doesn't yield the seamlessly conservative record being peddled today. Federal government expanded on his watch. The conservative desire to outlaw abortion was never seriously pursued. Reagan broke with the hardliners in his administration and compromised with the Soviets on arms control. His assault on entitlements never materialized; instead he saved Social Security in 1983. And he repeatedly ignored the fundamental conservative dogma that taxes should never be raised.

Reagan made one of the greatest ideological about-faces in the history of the presidency, agreeing to a $165 billion bailout of Social Security. In almost every way, the bailout flew in the face of conservative ideology. It dramatically increased payroll taxes on employees and employers, brought a whole new class of recipients--new federal workers--into the system, and, for the first time, taxed Social Security benefits, and did so in the most liberal way: only those of upper-income recipients. (As an added affront to conservatives, the tax wasn't indexed to inflation, meaning that more and more people have gradually had to pay it over time

Faced with looming deficits, Reagan raised taxes again in 1983 with a gasoline tax and once more in 1984, this time by $50 billion over three years, mainly through closing tax loopholes for business. Despite the fact that such increases were anathema to conservatives--and probably cost Reagan's successor, George H.W. Bush, reelection--Reagan raised taxes a grand total of four times just between 1982-84.

One could only imagine a proprosal like the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 going over like a lead balloon in this day and age. If Reagan were running for office today, he would have probably already dropped out of the race. If you think Rush and Savage are taking McCain to the wood shed, one can only
imagine what they would be saying about Reagan.

Foreskin I just finished the Reagan Diaries and now I have it on my ipod and am listening to it while I work out.

The man never ever comprimised on his core conservative principles. He was a man of great faith. He was the only force against evil in our time. He turned around one of the worst economies since the great depression thanks to Jimmy the nut.

Your rant is typical. Any man that was President of the United Sates can have his record cherrie picked.

Woodruff........I have no concern about anyones religion, especially Mitt's, I like his positions. If he is on my ballot, he will get my vote and I am a devout Heathen.

My point was that people ARE definately swayed by a candidates religion, race or gender, in spite of what they say.

Mitt is a Mormon and that's OK with me, and obviously the area of the Nation with the highest Morman population gave him the nod. Obama will garner the highest percentage of the Black vote, nationwide and Hillary will have the highest female vote, nationwide.

Race, gender and religion ARE real factors and cannot be ignored.

202 your deflection of facts as rants is what has become so typical. I just listed a fraction of his comprimises of core conservative principles. Cherry picking indeed! An Ex-Gov. of California that made his fortunes in Hollywood and lived by a schedule dictated by Jean Dixon. Your right, the current republican party would have welcomed him with open arms.

Personally I believe it was these very comprimises that has made Reagan endeared to this day. I voted for him...twice!

Even if Mitt does drop out of the race I think he has scored a great victory for those that share his religious affiliation. Oren Hatch is getting pretty old, perhaps Mitt should take up residency in Utah and run for senate.

Regan, a "man of great faith," that's a laugh. . . He was no where near God for most of his entire life . . . 02, you are waayyyyyyyyyyyy drunk on the juice man. . . .

In his diaries he talks about prayer and his faith is mentioned quite often. His diaries kinda show a side the public never saw.

I'm sure my autobiography would look much different than your biography of me. . .

His son and ex wife confirm that he was NOT a religious person until he got into public, and more specific the US presidency. . . Russia was partly responsible. . .

Anyhow, it really does not matter much, Regan left a legacy but not of a true conservative, instead, he marked the beginning of a new conservative movement. . .

Of course religion played a big role in peoples decicion to vote for romney in utah, but its not like he wasnt one of the front runners in the race already and they picked him just because he was a mormon. I acually know a few people here in utah that didnt vote for him because he was mormon.
