LAST EDITED ON Oct-15-04 AT 05:08PM (MST)[p]Hello all.

I have been lurking here for over two years and used to post on the public page before it required registration. Now I thought I would register and join the fun.

My dad and I have hunted elk (and occasionally deer) in Colorado unit 211 for most of the last 10 years. This year we each have 4th season cow tags good for both unit 11 and 211. The area we generally hunt is simply getting too crowded with other hunters and we have been studying the maps for another area to check out. Would anyone be willing to suggest a public land area in these units that is good for elk.

Thanks for the help.

My son will be hunting in units 11/211 for his first big game hunt during the 3rd season. Everyone I've talked to has said that there will be many elk thoughout both units during the 3rd season (that is the season I have been asking about). But what I hear, I doesn't matter where you go (during the 3rd season), the hunters will be where the elk are. That tells me you may not be alone, unless you can get more than a mile from the roads, on the private property or access to the BLM land that is locked up by private holdings. We are facing the same situation for my son's hunt. I can let you know what we see during the 3rd season and where we hunted when we get back home. Good luck on your hunt!

Smokepole,

Thank you for the reply and for the offer to share information. I hope you and your son do well and look forward to hearing from you after the hunt.

Just read your thread I have not been in unit 211 but I just got back from Unit 11 saw lots of Elk -I Meet a local who says he counted about 250 ELK about 2 weeeks prior to opening of first rifle season-

for my group it was disappointing when on opening day you could see on the private land 'headlights' at the rim- we were past by horsemen who rode thru public land and ran the Elk up to the waiting shooters

I have not heard so much auto fire since the military!

unit 11 is a great place to hunt terrain not so bad- but like others need pack horse for when you get lucky

hope your hunt went well

saw lots of Mulies also

Thaks for the reply. We had hot dry weather in unit 211 this year during 4th season so the hunting was very difficult. We went 0 for 4 on elk. Saw a lot of evidence of many elk having been taken in the 3rd season when the weather was snowy.

Where in Unit 11 were you? Around Maybell?

Good Luck.
