First Elk

I posted this about deer on the deer board so decided to do the same on elk.

What gun and caliber did you shoot your first elk with? I shot mine with a Savage model 99 in 300 savage. It spined her and down she went. That has been the only big game that I have gotten when my wife was with me. I wouldn't have been able to get the elk out without her help. We were in 2 and a half feet of snow. We halved that big cow and loaded her on our two saddle horses and headed back to the pick-up. Great memories.

I shot my first Elk w/ my Rem 721 30-06. Just a spike, but was in a spike only area. 25-yds perfect double lung.

Shot my first Bull when I was 16 with a Howatt Hunter Recurve. First deer I took at 15 with a Bear compound. First bear , 16 with a savage 270.

i was 15 and shot a 6x5 bull with a custom 7mm mauser,, dropped him one shot at 200 yds,, have not been drawn since oh well good memories....also shot my first deer with it too, a 2 point right in the back of the head dropped it like a rock...cbryant

I was 23 and shot a 6x6 bull with my ruger 300 win mag, and am still waiting for my first deer kill, other than finishing of crappy shots that a few friends of mine have made.

First elk was a spike, he was about 250 yards. One shot with the trusty old 30.06. He went right down. Since then I have killed only one elk, and that was a cow with my bow 3 years back.
Gotta love hunting elk!

Spike in 1994, Win. M70 .30/06. First 3 were: 2 in the lungs, 1 in the salad (ugh!). 4th in the neck. A handful of antlerless since, and a 281 6x6 with my bow in 2002.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-25-05 AT 02:46PM (MST)[p]My first elk was a spike (because I missed the big one, and I couldn't get anyone else to shoot at him because there were too many elk running around) shot in the fall of 1990. Shot him with a Ruger M77 chambered in 7mm Remington Magnum topped off with a Leupold Vari X II 3x9x40. I was shooting 150 Remington Core Lokt bullets and we don't even need to discuss the range I was shooting...lets just say it was a long, long way away. We won't discuss the amount of powder burned, or the amount of lead alloy I put in the air to get him either, but when I finally hit him he went right down....then he got right back up and I knew I couldn't hit him again. Luckily he went about 30 yards and piled up. Along with my spike, my father-in-law piled up a 5x5 and one of the other gentlemen we hunt with shot a rag 4 point. Oh, the memories!

The gun...traded on a BAR in .300 Winchester Magnum because everyone else in camp was shooting BAR's in 7mm Remington Magnum. Due to my impatience as a youth I couldn't stand to wait until the gun store got a 7mm Mag in so I "settled" for a .300 Win Mag. Best "settle" I ever did. I've shot ten elk since then with all but one being killed with a .300 Winchester Magnum. I now shoot that caliber in a Browning Stainless Stalker shooting 200 grain Nosler Accubonds. So does my father-in-law and his two son's. My father-in-law and one son shoot 180 grain Swift Scirocco's and the other son shoots the same as me.

i shot my first 2 elk with a savage 99e that i got on my 13th bday. the first elk i missed on the first shot, then second one i hit him right below the jaw bone and he didnt move a bit.

the second cow i put the first 165 grain bullet right throuhg her and she did a back flip. my first deer was with a remington 700 mountain rifle lss 30-06

I shot my first elk in 1990 with a good ole .54 cal T/C Hawken Muzzy I finished my self. I was with my younger brother and a friend. The elk out wieghed us all put together. I still don't know how we got him out! Luckily it was all down hill!

Since then I have killed 2 with a 7mm, but all the rest have been with my bow. Whatever the weapon it is awesome! Congrats to you all!

First bull was a decent 5x5 that I took from 275 yards with my Winchester Model 70 in 7mm Remington Mag. First elk was a cow at about 100 yards with the same rifle two years earlier.
