Unit 2 and 201 antelope need some advice

I have a state wide antelope tag this year. Just looking for some advice on where to hunt. I have been looking at 2 and 201. Anybody with any help would be appreciated. Thanks

2 and 201 are not good. You can hunt out there, but they do not manage the unit for trophy quality at all for goats. The tag numbers are low because the animal numbers are low. If I had a statewide tag I would definitely be looking elsewhere. Unit 3 has way more antelope (mostly on private) but the trophy quality is better. Unit 12 has a small heard but also produces some large antelope as does 211. 11 is SOSO. Of Course unit 10 there is no Lope hunting. I would venture to think that there are areas with way better antelope herds, populations and quality.

That's not good news. I figured hanging that close to the Wyoming border and sweetwater county it would be good. Another thing is I can start hunting rifle on August 27th. Any thoughts on unit 3. Thanks.

I spent a lot of time working in the gas fields north of Baggs and can honestly say the majority of the big speed goats coming out of sweetwater county are north more toward I-80.

Unit 3 has some fantastic speed goat hunting. My cousin has guided up in 3 for years and they always kill big bucks but on private. If I had your tag I would load up on a weekend and drive as many county roads in unit 3 and 11 as I could and get a hit list bucks. If you want to try 2 and 201 I would look on the far north ends north of Lookout mountain.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-17-16 AT 08:39PM (MST)[p]Unit 2/201 does suffer from low antelope numbers but there are some super bucks up there that slip under the radar due to low numbers and tag allotments. It takes strong commitment, time, boot leather, and fuel to locate them rare gems but they are there. 3/301 is good on Pvt but BLM is hunted hard so rarely does a buck get the chance to fully mature let alone the most recent winter kill which was bad. Unit 11 suffered a winter kill as well and has some awesome bucks too but winter and high tag allotments limits this unless again as on 2/201 you can apply commitment, time, boot leather, and fuel to scour the unit for the biggin's. BTW the largest buck I have ever seen in Colorado was on Unit 11. Although I have never hunted the area the intel I have tells me deep SE Colorado is the area for a true Mack daddy buck. Pvt land will be the issue but with a tag like you have I would be willing to front a little cash for some decent acres in prime antelope country in far SE Co. Lastly do not undersell unit 6. It's worth the review...

Good luck on your quest and please let us know how you did.

Thanks for info. I am a true hunter who hits the it hard. I know if you pound 2 and 201hard there has to be a beast there. It has little to zero pressure. I know the south east has some pigs on it. Lots of private. I do want a true hunt and an adventure. Thanks for input.

I have had a couple of state wide goat tags and killed my best goats just east and south of Trinidad near the New Mexico border. Good goats up in Moffatt County like you are talking though. I've hunted 3 several times and seen a couple of 80 plus goats.

There is a large chunk of very wild public land just south of Wyoming and west of 13 in unit 3 that used to be loaded with antelope. After last winter, I don't know. It's vast sagebrush country.

Wouldn't waste my time in the NW corner if you're looking for something mega. If it were me I'd be focusing on the southern part of the state around the NM border

I have hunted 2,201 three times now and have a tag this year as well. If you hold out, cover a bunch of miles you should expect to have a chance at an 80+ goat. Or you might run in to one right out the gate opening day! It's a solid unit so don't let everybody get you down on it. Lets face it they less then .0001% of these people have ever had a tag up there. Have fun, I will be in a lifted Silver 2016 Chevy. I will show you all my videos of the small bucks.

>How bout postin some pics of
>all those 80 inchers you've
>killed up in 2,201?

Easy man, are you the king of the forum because you have 6700 posts!! Looks like you do more typing than hunting. Anyways?. I have killed 2 bucks over 80'' up there, I have been fortunate for sure. No need to stroke my ego or yours, I just was stating a true fact. I know of people as well as myself that have done well up there due to hard work and dedication. Sorry if that bothers anybody but, it is what it is. By the way I don't post too many pics so PM me your cell number or email and I will send you whatever you want. I think I have a few pics on this website from last year. Looks like you are on here a lot DW so Im sure you can find them.

So how many of those 80+ bucks came in the last 5 years? Please tell?

On the flip side all he asked for was some pics of the bucks. Yet you get defensive. If you read every post prior to your ego post about how you have killed 2 over 80. They were all spot on for the unit. It is not a trophy goat unit at all. the numbers in the units suck, the limited tag numbers are not designed for trophy quality but are out of necessity due to crappy populations. You are correct that there are a couple really good goats in the unit, but heck we all know there are 180 deer and 300" + bulls in almost all units as well.

It is simple, if you have a state wide antelope tag, there are some much better units with significantly more antelope with shear numbers tends to come great chances at big antelope.

So go ahead and attack a guy because he asked for pictures, attack his post count, and then fail to produce proof.

Having work with an outfitter in 2 for years in early 2000s and being friends with another. I can say that there are usually many more trophy Antelope taken out of 3 and 301 than there are out of 2 or 201. Sure there might be a small shot and he might get lucky, but why not put the odds more in your favor when there are better units?

Kind like telling a person to hit unit 76 with the state wide elk tag instead of 2 or 201. Yes there are some great bulls in 76 but it does not keep up with 2 or 201.

We're you driving around in a Black Expedition or Yukon?

I saw one guy driving around looking lost!

I almost stopped but I had a tire with a slow leak and I was trying to get into town before a friend went to church for the night! He had a tire machine!

If it was you I wished I would have stopped to BS!

I had to re register on the site. I was up there for three days looking around. I was not lost at all just never been in that area. I had my gps with all the state and BLM. I was trying to cover entire area on just a scouting expedition since I have never been in that country. It took a few days it is a huge area. I have a better feel for the country now. I saw lots of antelope glassed probably 100 bucks from 3,2,201. I put some miles on the vehicle it is awesome land that is vast country. I did not get out on foot much as I did not want to just wander BLM aimlessly. I glassed big private areas just to see potential and genetics of animals. I honestly did not see any goats worth pursuing. I know there has to some big ones, with all the canyons etc... Obviously I did not have any insight as to water locations or local insight. All the animals were in the 12 to 13 inch class. Saw one decent buck on 4 and county road 21. He was interesting. Thought would see bigger animals. I actually drive unit 104 where I work and have some land and see Better bucks just driving daily. I'm sure there a good ones there I just didn't find any.

I drove a lot of country. I did not see a lot of great bucks. It's gorgeous up there. I drove from morning till night for three days.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-30-16 AT 07:59PM (MST)[p]Sorry. I should have qualified the lost statement. I could tell you were cruising and looking. The tracks in the dirt looked like you were driving roads, stopping glassing driving, etc. I was on county road 21N and passed you in a Big Dark Blue Mega Cab. At first it did not dawn on me at all that it might have been you until I saw the tracks in the road indicating your glassing and stopping. Sorry I did not stop. As I mentioned I had a tire with a slow leak and by running into town before it got too late I was able to get a buddies shop and get my flat fixed.

It is incredible country but sadly the population is nothing like it used to be...

Yes there has been one better buck running around 4 and 21. I have seen one better buck pushing 16-17 inches further to the west. He has been in WY twice and Colorado once. There were a ton of doe in Colorado side last time through and I am certain he will end up on the Colorado side. Just a matter of time.

>No worries. Do you know
>anything about unit 11.

You just need to try a little harder in 2/201. I read it on the Internet.

11 is much the same as the rest in the NW. Lots of country, scattered antelope and someplace there will be one or 2 good ones but a lot of dinks. I am certain if you spend enough time looking you could find a goat in the area worth your effort. So far I have seen only the one north of powder wash camp on the WY CO boarder. There has been one more decent buck I have seen about 2 miles north of Craig on the high way. Of course he is hanging out on the private.

Like you mentioned there is just so much ground and so few total antelope finding the big one is either going to take lots of luck or lots of time.

He was due north of powder wash. He was about 1.5 miles into WY and on the west side of the road. Earlier this year he was just 500 yards into Colorado by that old stone foundation on the west side. I bet he might have been the same buck.

I hunted 11 few years ago. Had a great time. Glassed more bucks than I could count till I found one that went 14". Biggest one I saw. Access to private probably would have helped. But that was fun.

Blackdog, how did the hunting go?

My hunting spot is so secret, not even the elk have found it yet.

Sweet glad your ego is stroked! And I am sure you will brag about your amazing 700 yard shot! Haha congrats on proving just how awesome you are!

Considering an pronghorns ears is 5 to 6 inches that goat looks to be on,y about 12 inches tall? Good mass but not much cutter and not much curve! Would like to see a score sheet! They are deceiving, but would like the score sheet to see how it stacked up

I think it's a damn nice goat. Nice job. Hope it was a fun hunt for you! That's more important than a 70" or even a 90" score!

Well you guys say what you want, you can come and see him anytime. Here is another pic for the naysayers, don't worry I understand. It's 60 day drying period is up Dec. 10th come down and see a "12inch" Pronghorn make book.

I had a blast, I watched elk rutting all morning and then went out to the Desert to go hunt speed goats! It does not get much better than that, can't wait to do it again next year.

Looks like a nice goat to me. I would definitely not expect widespread support for critter scores posted on the forums. Ain't gonna happen. Lots of armchair scorers out there.

Congrats on a nice buck!

HEHE... You poor thing! Sorry but your very first post in the thread called out other members. then you proceeded down a road of chest thumping and finally in the end you posted a pick of a decent goat for no other reason than to puff your chest some more. Sorry but the NW units are still not great trophy units for anything but elk. Are there some? Yes, but a very low end WY unit still has more trophy goats than 2 and 201 combined. Some of the SE units have more, just as mentioned Mr. Trophy Hunter...

Congrats on a great buck!
As far as score, I couldn't tell the difference between a 70 & 85 on the ground, on the hoof..... lol, I just start shooting :)

Ha ha hardly chest pounding, I didn't know you needed a bunch of POSTS to be able to give advice around here? If you read what my first post was I said " with some hard work and planning you should expect to kill a 80" goat" Then I was told I was full of B.S.. This year I produce ANOTHER 80" + goat in that unit and I still get crap? Get off the road and you might find a giant!?
I will end this hear I will let the great white hunters with the thousands of posts take over, I'm bored with you anyway.

If he is really 15" then I see 80+, no doubt. I would have guessed 13 and around 77, at 15 that puts him at 81.

I believe you!
