Elk success in Alberta

I took this mature 5x5 bull on a friends ranch. He was with 10 cows in a fringe forest area. As this is an open 3 pt area that has a 1 month archery and 2.5 month rifle season. few bulls make it to this size. After spotting him the night before, I set up on an unharvested grain field and took him at 425 yds with a 270 Win 130 gr Speer Grand Slams Rifle is an FN browing Leupold 2-7
After taking care of him, a Case MX110 was used in retrieval, I drove the 140 miles home and harvested grain and hay all week.

Nice bull, Great shot, I thought that was a long shot for a 270 but that bull looks pretty dead, so I guess it worked. Congrats

While I do believe that I would have had a quicker kill with my 300 Win pre 64 M70, There is still the fact that you have to hit them to kill them, having the extra confidence in the unit, makes a lot of difference. That said, I will not hesitate to use the 270 on any subsequent hunt. BTW I gave the bull 8" of daylight over his back, which means 15" of drop which ended up being the correct holdover in this case.

Sounds to me like you can call your shots pretty well...Great bull, Congrats~
