OK, for those of you willing to show your cards what's it gonna be-Early, Late, Archery, CWMU, or muzzleloader?

Here's what I got-10 points going *late.

*Subject to change w/o notice:)

Early, it's all or nothing. but I must admit the late draw odds are tempting.

Prism

I THINK YOU'RE BULLSHIPPING US A LITTLE!!!

ARE YOU SENDING FRANKLINS & HOW MANY???

THE ONLY bobcat WONDERING???

LAST EDITED ON Nov-28-05 AT 09:40PM (MST)[p]Bullshipping-nope! If I was putting in tonight it would be for the late hunt! I'm sick of putting in for elk. They're big stinky thangs, and they don't look or act like big muleys so I say it's time to get it done so I can put in for something that's more of a challenge! We all know the hardest thing about killing an elk in Utah is drawing the freaking tag:)

I've heard of that Franklin character. But, all my wallet can handle is a couple beat up Washingtons (until the wife decides she needs them worse than me)!

I have 12 points. i will be putting in for the premium hunt until my boy is old enough to apply in a couple of years. Then I will put in partners with him and split the points. That way he isn't starting at the bottom of the line. That is unless by some miracle I actually draw a premium tag.

Nah that won't happen.

WELL Prism

WE SEE EYE TO EYE ON THEM BIG STUPID STANKY BULLS!!!

NOW ON THAT LATE HUNT THEY AIN'T QUITE AS STUPID,I GET IT,IT'S THAT CHALLENGE THANG YOU LIKE!!!

THE ONLY bobcat THINKING THE REAL CHALLENGE IS THE DRAW FOR SURE!!!

ELK??? Im still trying for a stupid goat tag!! 6 points!!!! For 3 corners!! WTF???????? Supposed to be a 2-3 year unit, by the time I draw this thing, then rack up 28 points for my late season Diamond mountain, 3x2 or less tag, i'll be something like, hmm, let me add real quick- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - REALLY FLIPPIN OLD!!!!

I take the month of September and early week in October off so I'm doing bow-bull LE.

Tony--6 Antelope pts??? Why on earth 3-C then?? Rifle...?

BESS--- the most sought after bull-tag in our state is all yours this year with out any Franklins or Washingtons needed.... if ya wanna go for the 'Zion' unit..... he

The bar has been raised again, I am looking for a 424 bull. No way am I shooting a raggie 380. Definitely a unit where they are around every tree and standing in every draw.

I will be doing the rifle rut shoot season. No hunting harder for me. I am hiring the MonsterMuley Premium Guide Service this year. 8579 spotters looking for ktc the biggest, baddest, highest scoring bad boy in the state.

So boys, tell me, where am I applying this year? I always listen to my guides. In case anyone forgot, 13 points in my savings account. I am a lock in most units. I tip pretty good too.

Wasatch-archery elk = 8 points
Pinevalley Desert Sheep = 12 points

While everyone that lives on the wasatch front was chasing all over the state looking for deer/elk.
I was able to find a couple of good canyons that holds some bruiser-bucks(28"-32")& there was also 2/6x6(330-350 class) bulls & 1/7x8 (365-370 class) bulls in the same general area.
All of which was within 30-40 minutes from Spanish fork.
I can't wait until fall get's here again.

Thanx,
Sniper69

>>Tony--6 Antelope pts??? Why on earth
>3-C then?? Rifle...?
>

Not anymore!! Im going the big dog now!! I origianlly thought Id just drw in 2-3 years, get er done and move on. Then I had 4 pts, then 5 pts, then 6, then "screw it" prolly go for deseret next year, just looking for about a 75"er.........

KTC,

Cannot wait until you draw and we all help you get that well deserved bull.

I can see the thread title now " The Boy's and KTC's 400+ Bull!!!"

The 2006 season's will not get here soon enough.

Alan

Elkslayer,

I am more excited about "next year" more than ever. Probably more for deer prospects than elk.

I am just kidding about the 380 raghorn. I will set my sights at 350 and anything more is icing on the cake. 350 is a good bull and realistically that is a good benchmark. 400 would be pretty damn cool if I could get lucky and the stars line up just right.

Wouldn't a Mossback vs. MonsterMuley elk challenge be fun? I will get the tag, you guys help me scout, tie him to a tree, and let's see who snags the biggest bull. Sounds fun if I am the one packing the heat.;-)

OK fellars, where do I apply? Don't tell me Diamond Mountain either.

A God? Now that is something I have never been called before PD. A GD something or another, but never just a God. Maybe I will do Pahvant and try to set the record for "Most Points Ever Held For Elk."

Who do I think would kill a bigger bull between Mossback and MonsterMuleys? Well, that is a easy one. Mossback hands down.

Here is my reasoning. MM people just piss and moan at each other. If a MM guide service was assembled and a hunter shot one, it would be unethical, not the same doing it solo, no better than a wealth tag, a shoot not a hunt, not a hunt without wearing out some Danners in one day hiking 83 miles, the hunter should have hunted harder, etc, etc, etc.;-)

If a guy asked for help on a 1000 square mile unit, he would be tarred and feathered for asking such a question. He should live in the area and know the unit inside and out before applying. The MM bunch is great for general help, but never, ever, would someone give help in a once or twice in a lifetime hunt. Mossback has a common goal.

Elkslayer,

You know better than to say the "D" word. That place kicked my ass once and I won't let it happen again.:)

ktc

Anyways thanks for your opinion, but back to your question. I've quided on the pahvant, boulder, and dutton. The boulder and dutton have great bulls on them but it is to up and down. I would stick with the pahvant. They didn't get all of them this year. Some of the bulls i pick up their horns every year are still running around . The last two years we've been watching some gaints on the boulder, but they are alot harder to keep track of. But the big bulls on pahvant are alot more predictable. But if you cant wait ten years to draw the beaver would be my second choice. I just learned how to email know i just need to learn how to spell! Hope that might help. Tadd

I agree with Tinesup that Beaver is a sleeper unit for big bulls. The biggest draw back to beaver is the L.E archery elk, archery spike elk and archery deer hunts run right up to the day before the rifle elk starts. It's tuff to scout and keep track of bulls with that much activity. With max pts I say pahvant all the way.

I am a nonres with 10 points. I am thinking of an archery hunt again.. Or maybe dive into an any weapon on a lesser unit. Need to study odds this year. I would be happy with anything 360. I dont need 380-400 stuff although i wouldnt balk at it either.... It seems that with archery there is a pretty good difference between res and nonres on draw odds. Any weapon seems to be pretty much the same. Any advice from you guys would be great. Also open to anyone that knows a place well that would want to do a video thing. I did a video last year of my buddies hunt and all i can say is that is was as much fun as actually hunting.
PM me. Pat

ktc,
Flip a coin between 2 units you want and pick one as heads and one as tails. It wont matter which one you draw you should do fine.Between your brother helping you out and your horses I can see a big-un going to the taxidermist next year.
Elkslayer tell us a little about what you think of that special unit that starts with D.I remember well what you told me that day we were looking in that one drainage when you were bowhunting.I still crack up what you said a guy would need to kill one in that place. That was a steep and ugly area and I was glad we did not drop off into that area.
Good luck ktc you are now even confusing me on what unit I should try for.Archery, early Rifle,Muzzleloader,or Late Rifle?I know my 9 points will not be enough to go,but if you draw I hope you will need some help scouting.

Bird and Elkslayer,

I hope I do not get in trouble for this, but I know what Elkslayer said as he pulled away on Friday the 16th about the damn "D" unit.

"The last time I see the Dutton is going to be in my rear view mirror!!!!!!!!!" :)

Ok, here goes, heads it's Pahvant, tails it's Pahvant.

The coin is flipping, dropping on the floor, rolling to a stop.....It's the Pahvant boys.

Now I can tell you all how 14 points taste.;-)

Warbirdum and KTC,

Yea,my best two quotes for the Dutton this year were:

"The last time I see the Dutton is going to be in my rear view mirror"

and

"You need a fricken shute plane and machine gun for this dang canyon"

I figured that I would hang out on this thread for a while since I am getting bashed on the other thread.

KTC, good pick on the Pahvant. I guess that I will have to archery deer hunt it for you and tie-up that 400+. But, please make sure you put that bull down with "one shot". I wouldn't wish the swimming bull, or rolling bull, or gimpy bull, or limpy bull, on anyone.

I have 9 bonus points and can't decide between a ML hunt or a late season hunt. Each have their benefits and drawbacks. Not that I even have a chance at either tag for the units I would like to hunt. What would you all do with 9 points?

CS

LAST EDITED ON Nov-30-05 AT 09:54PM (MST)[p]Pat,

If you are going archery, go with the Pahvant of San Juan. Both have large numbers of nice bulls. Some of the other units have very nice bulls, but if you can't spend the time, or don't know the area, there's a good chance you'll go home with nothing. Good luck!

Dub

With 9 points I'd put in for the archery tag on Diamond Mountain. Lots of places to hunt and lots of HUGE bulls!:)

Shoot, I may do the same thing!

With 9 points the late hunts seem to be the ticket. I have been hearing of some slammer bulls being shot on the late hunts. The odds are favorable too. Makes me wonder with max points. I heard one guy who spends a lot of time with the elk say the late hunts were an easier hunt than the rut. Go figure.

Prism

WITH THAT SAID WE KNOW WHERE YOU'RE PUTTING IN FOR!!!

I'LL CALL THE UDWR & MAKE SURE WHEN THEY NOTICE AN ERR ON YOUR APPLICATION TO CHANGE IT TO ARCHERY DIAMOND!!!

THE ONLY bobcat LMFAO!!!

ktc

YOU ARE RIGHT!!!

NEARLY EVERYBODY I KNOW THAT DREW THE LATE HUNT TOOK TROPHY BULLS!!!

I'D SAY ITS THE HUNT TO PUT IN FOR!!!

WITH ODDS LIKE THAT WHY NOT???

I THOUGHT THERE'D BE ALOT OF BUSTED UP BULLS BUT THEY PROVED ME WRONG!!!

THE ONLY bobcat THINKING IF WE LIKE TO HUNT,(AND WE DO RIGHT???)THAT LATE HUNT IS WHERE YOU'LL CAPITALIZE!!!

This is hilarious. It is like a Texas Hold 'Em tournament. Each player looks deeply into the written thread, analyzing it, hoping to get a hint at the other guy's next move. We bluff, lie, and cheat to give the impression we are doing one thing only to do another. We study the odds charts hoping everyone else is a caveman not seeing what happened previously. Using the draw odds to our advantage hoping no one else uses them. This is intense stuff guys.

We think "Maybe if I do not reply to this thread it will go away." "If I tell people Wasatch then they will all do Wasatch further limiting my chance to draw." "How dare Prism start a thread like this people might learn about my unit and my bull!" "I am going to tell people about all of the 430 bulls on Diamond to entice others to leave my coveted Wasatch alone."

We are a rare breed. I will answer your question Prism.

13 points.
Pahvant Early.
Iverson Jr is my bull. So don't even think about messing with Pahvant or Iverson Jr Damn it!!!!!!;-)

I will raise you 1 point and call you on the Diamond stick flip.

I just wish the flop was before April!;-)

The Mt Dutton unit was one of the most physically demanding units that I have ever hunted.

I made the mistake of putting in for the draw on UNIT HYPE and not heeding the advise of some of the good MM advise and taking a look at the terrain before you put in. The Dutton unit has one ( yes one ) road that runs directly north to south on the "TOP" of this unit. Everything to hunt is down to the east and west sides. When I say "DOWN" I mean it. There is not allot of access from the lower elevations either. A horse is by far the best way to hunt this unit. Most of the animals were middle elevation and very hard to get to.

I was dissapointed in the overall amount of animals that I saw during my archery elk hunt. I expected alot more from a unit like this. The overall quality was less than what I had expected also. The best bull I saw was maybe 370 and not to many of them.

I had freinds that hunted other limited entry units that took far less points to draw and had alot better experience in seeing animals and having opportunity to shoot than I did.

If you are going to blow 9 points as I did last year, make sure it is a unit that you will enjoy spending alot of time on. Take a look at road access, terrain type, elevation changes, etc.

When I start putting in for elk again, it will be on a different unit ( Archery, Muzz or rifle ). The Dutton is very difficult and takes alot of effort to hunt it effectively. I passed on a few 310" type bulls that I wished now had shot. But, even those opportunities were few and far between even after 6 to 10 miles a day with elevation changes on foot.

Best of luck to all of you in the draw this year.

Send your 2006 success story and pictures to me first so I can review them for ethics violations and save you some heartburn!

Me and a buddy drew cow tags on Dutton and had a very hard time. This was even before they closed all the roads. I know some people like it, but I would never hunt there without horses. It was an awful experience.

Elkslayer

Don't feel to bad your not the only person to have a good ol butt kickin on the dutton. One of the premium tag holders this year ended up with a 300 class bull on the late hunt. He turned down some 350 class bulls on the earlier hunts and didn't see anything bigger after that.

I know for a fact Alan's disappointment was not from a lack of total dedication either. If scouting and hard work was the only indicator of bull size harvested, he would have gotton a biggie.

If I remember right he scouted in excess of 20 something days and hunted over 12.

I myself thought I should have seen alot better bulls on the unit.I was glad I did not draw the archery tag in 2005.I guided the rifle hunt and it was tough finding any real worthy bulls scouting and hunting. Is the qaulity shot out?I think the average bull on the Dutton is not even close to what was written up about the unit for 2005.I know I will never just put in for a unit again going off what someone has written or said.

HMMMMMM. Sure a lot of guys down on Dutton.

Trying to hide something???

My brother lived in Antimony. We use to spend quite a bit of time down there on the north end. Saw some huge bulls, but maybe the elk armies of 2004 took the cream of the crop and it needs are year or two....

I for one am walking away from the Pahvant after 20 years of applying there. I don't want to deal with the circus that has taken over there. It has become a joke, the amount of people and all the freakin guides and their cult followings. Then toss in all the wannabee guides. I can't take it any more. I grew up there and have hunted there my whole life, but my once in a lifetime elk will not come from there. So I'm pretty sure I'm going elk hunting in 06!!!! I'm walking away with no regrets.... And can't wait to finally hunt an elk in my home state after 20 years. I'll tell ya where when I get my tag in the mail..... And I will have a shot a just as big of elk as I would've if I'd waited 10 more years for the Pahvant circus.

Evan

I am not down on it Prism, as long is it is never again my sorry butt navigating that rat hole.

What is to tell? The place is shot out to a degree. The place is over ran with the high priced guides and their "cult following." (Sorry Evan, I liked that one!) Do not worry about unethical wheeler trails cuz there ain't any anywhere. Believe me if you decide to be unethical the forest lady in hot on things.

There is no shade, the rocks are miserable, rattlesnakes up the whazoo, each bull packs two cows, they are call weary from the cult, and the place is not fit for a horny toad.

Give her a whirl buddy. I will send your wife my condolences.

WHOA!!!

NO ATV TRAILS???

IS THERE SUCH A PLACE???

NO POSSIBLE TUNE-UPS???

DON'T SOUND LIKE MY TYPE OF HUNTING!!!

THE ONLY bobcat KNOWING FOR A FACT THIS PLACE IS SHOT OUT!!!

Bess,

I kid you not. No wheeler trails. I felt like I was in a whole different world on that unit. One road in and one road out. 15 miles of steep nasty country on every side of the one road too. I think many elk would rot on that mountain after a one shot kill.

Any big bulls by Nomad to tell us about? Anthro? Diamond Mountain? Books?

Diamond Mountain seems to be a hot ticket this year. Oquirhs are hot also.

Elkslayer, you forgot one of your Dutton quotes. Here are some of my favorites:

"Get back in that truck with your tag and race to the nearest DWR office." - Elkslayer

"I ain't shootin' nothin' unless it's 380+" - The pre-dawn beer drinker.

"That's deer is huge" - The bus load of Europeans at the Antimony merc admiring another hunters bull.

"If that French guy pushes me one more time to get a picture, we're going to have a talk" - Friend of the guy with the bull.

It's amazing how much stress these hunts put on people. When you guys draw, don't forget to enjoy the hunt. KTC, Elkslayer, Warbird, and NTHERUT, thanks for the time and conversation. I'll get even if I can.

Watch out for rattle snakes we killed one in our camp one day.We were going to put it on elkslayers trailer step but decided not to.This could have pushed him over the top near the end of his hunt.Elkslayer wasnt that the day I had a flat on my trailer and yo had one on your truck. That one and only decent road can chew up tires and spit them out.I was sure glad my trailer had a.c. that palce is hot and I am not talking Paris Hilton HOT.Saddlesore knows what I am talking about the first time we ran into you scouting. You looked mighty thirsty.Sorry I could not help you out that day with a ice cold drink.I could go on about the dutton but dont want to discourage to many people I think everyone should experience that place at least once in your life.Let me know what you think after you hunt it one time. The fires at one time could have made it a decent place to hunt elk.The new growth will kill you trying to get through that stuff. The elk will even try and avoid the burn areas in most places now from what elkslayer and I noticed.

Alright, after sleepless nights and spreadsheet and different statistical anaylis' run. I am going to keep trying for the early rifle hunt on the Wasatch. With everybody jumping ship to try and draw, I should improve my odds by 15.2%

CS

After all of the talk about Diamond this year, the odds will regress to where you will need 11 points to be guaranteed a tag.

Good luck to all.

Chris

Lets not let this die just yet. Give some more opinions. Seriously, isn't it ethical to help a fellow hunter out? Tell him all you know to ensure success. Diamond late is getting my interest up.

SaddleSore,

You will be paying back in big way. I will pick a unit with forage though.

Bird,

You got beer duties. SaddleSore likes that no carb crap. He is watching his waistline. I am in for Bud because I do not care what my gut looks like. Elkslayer root beer? Women would be a bonus. See what you can do. Your trailer would be nice.

Elkslayer,

You are in charge of ranging and videoing. You are also in charge of editing woundage.

PleaseDear can saddle.

Chef can cook. No bear meat though. Yuck!

bess can kill wheelers.

I need some more guides, consultants, scouters, and spotters. Lets show Mossback how it is really done.;-)

Have you guys made up your minds yet? Or, are ya all scared to tell the world what your plans are?

My area is a secret. You will all know what area I apply for after the draw because there will only be one applicant.

The interviews start Monday for scouters, guides, and consultants so hurry and apply. It might take until September to get through all of the applicants.

You're hired!

That is very ethical of you bess to step in and aid a guy in need. You are one of the only ones here to talk the ethical talk and walk the ethical walk.

Anyone else? We are going for the Diamond Mountain stud. You should have that scouted real good bess come September. It is close enough to Altamont to get in some good after work scouting. I just might put Pahvant early as my second choice in case it goes undersubscribed.

GOSH DAMMMMMMMMMMNIT ktc!!!

I WISH YOU'D QUIT MENTIONING THAT (DM) AREA!!!

IT WAS KINDA SECRET BUT OH WELL!!!

I'M WILLING TO HELP BUT YOU'RE GONNA HAVE TO COOL IT A BIT!!!

THE ONLY bobcat SUGGESTING THERE IS NONE,ZIPPO,ZERO,NOTTA,NO SENSE IN PUTTING IN FOR DIAMOND,THE LAST I HEARD THERE WAS ONLY 2 RAGHORNS LEFT!!!

Diamond Mountain, Diamond Mountain, Diamond Mountain!!!!!!

No one is touching this subject bess.

We may be going it alone. People laugh at Diamond Mount, but they better get used to it. Remember those dreaded age objectives?

WHERE YOU GOING SO EARLY THIS MORNING ktc???

THEY MAY NOT LAUGH WHEN THEY SEE YOU PULL THE TAG & THEN SEE YOUR BULL!!!(IN THE BACK OF MY TRUCK OF COURSE!!!)

SOME OF THESE DM BULLS ARE 320 BULLS WHEN THEY ARE TWO YEARS OLD!!!

THE ONLY bobcat KNOWING FOR A FACT ITS BEEN A 'SLEEPER' UNIT!!!

It is too damn cold to go any where!

Actually, I just remembered I could not sleep. So I went up one and looked at what I wrote cuz I sure as hell don't remember it. Now that is scary! I ain't been drinkin' either.

I'm still leaning towards the late hunt! Sure wish they'd get the regs out so I could agonize over it more than I already am!:)

I've worn out last years regs and I'm sick of looking at the bonus point odds! April can't get here soon enough!

Prism,

I think with your bonus points and your super-human stealthiness. You ought to try the muzzleloader. I think your chances of drawing will be better next year using the smokepole. Not to mention that the rut seemed to peak a little later this season in the areas that I visited during the rut. I think the muzzleloader hunt could be where it is at this year.

Chris

Go over to the General Forum..... I brought it to the top this morning for you guys.

Thanks Alan for putting it on there a while back.......

Off for my last try on the 'Front' for a bull with the bow..... nippy up Mill Creek but I got about a 2 mile hike in before first horizon....
